Why Shiki Ryougi is far stronger than you think

DISCLAIMER: IF YOU WANT A SHORTER AND BETTER EXPLANATION THAT FOCUSES PURELY ON KNK'S OWN LORE WITHOUT OTHER TM SERIES, CHECK THIS THREAD AND CTRL+F TO "EXPLANATION OF ORIGINS" AND THEN "HOW STRONG IS SHIKI RYOUGI?"
This will be a short thread explaning some lies about Ryougi Shiki that have circulated for far too long. There is a surprising amount of people that claim Ryougi is no different from a normal human physically, and the only thing special about her are her eyes. After having recently re-read KnK with a proper and full translation finally, I can say with 100% certainty that this is complete bullshit. Ryougi is undeniably superhuman in both strength and speed, and this thread will demonstrate exactly why. Additionally, I’ll clear up several myths surrounding her MEoDP, such as the false notion that Nanaya's eyes are superior for killing physical entities, or that Ryougi is incapable of fighting Types.
General evidence:
Shiki was born as a vessel for 「 」, specifically designed to possess the highest degree of versatility achievable in human form:
Ryougi Shiki. The Ryougi clan was a family who had toiled over the ages to give birth to one with an empty body who could act as a vessel, all in order to create a human with maximum uses. To be empty was 「 」. Without realising what a dangerous thing they were doing, they had given birth to a body called Shiki who was connected to 「 」. - Kara no Kyoukai Chapter 5
She is described as a flawless program, an entity capable of executing any task with absolute precision. Countless personalities and qualifications were embedded within her core, allowing her to embody multiple roles seamlessly. The very purpose of the Ryougi lineage was to create a human that transcended the boundaries of humanity itself:
“The Ryougi family is a dynasty, just like the Asagami and the Fujou families. They are families who are trying to create humans who are beyond human, and used various methods to ensure the birth of an heir. All so that they could pass on their family’s ‘inheritance’.
“The Ryougi family is especially interesting. They knew that if they had a supernatural ability, they would one day be destroyed by the civilized world. So they thought up a supernatural ability that would let them appear as normal human beings. Hey, Kokutou. Those people we call professionals, why is it that they can only reach the top in one area?
That’s because no matter how perfect a body, or how high the amount of natural aptitude you are born with, you can only put one talent into one person. The higher you climb, the more you are restricted as to what other peaks you can go up, until in the end you cannot climb any others.
“The Ryougi family solved that problem by imbuing one body with a countless number of personalities. It’s the same as a computer. If you put hundreds upon hundreds of pieces of software into one piece of hardware called Shiki, a professional in all areas is created. That’s why her name is Shiki. The Shiki kanji in Shikigami. The Shiki kanji when you talk about Mathematical Formulas. A program that fulfills any task required of it perfectly. An empty doll that possesses countless numbers of identities, and can be modified by putting in another personality with different morals, thought patterns, even senses.”
Did Shiki already know of this..? Yeah, she definitely knew. That’s why she had stubbornly avoided becoming friendlier. Accepting the fact that she wasn’t an average person, the fact that she had not been born into a normal family, she had just been trying to live a quiet life.
“This is a continuation on the subject of the Taiji, but the division of the chaotic 「 」 into two is Ryougi. In order to further stabilize this, and in order to increase the number of classes available, they divide it into four phenomena. They then further increase the complexity by cutting it into eight trigrams. Like this, they keep dividing by a base of two. This, too, could symbolize Shiki’s ability. But that no longer exists. A bug appeared in the perfect program, you see. The Shiki you see now, well, there may be slight problems, but she is a perfectly normal human with self-awareness.”
“Why are you making a face like that? The one that broke it was you. A mentally disturbed person, you see, doesn’t break down because they don’t even dream that they may be mentally disturbed. Shiki was like that before, too. Yeah, but a human called Kokutou Mikiya made her aware of the fact. That the existence of the one called Ryougi Shiki was strange. Ah, that’s right. If you were to say it was a rescue, you already saved Shiki two years ago, didn’t you? - Kara no Kyoukai Chapter 5
When Touko states that Shiki lost “that ability” and is now a “perfectly normal human with self-awareness, ” she isn’t saying that Shiki has lost her innate capacity to perform at near-perfection. Instead, she means that after meeting Mikiya, Shiki gained the desire to live life on her own terms, free from the predetermined roles imposed by her family or anyone else. She now acts with her own agency, rather than as a pre-programmed entity executing predetermined functions.
However, this newfound autonomy does not diminish her natural ability to excel in any task. Even outside of combat, her latent capabilities remain evident, for instance, in this scene:
“Then where did you get this morning’s porridge from? It was a taste that couldn’t have come from a convenience store.”
“That was Shiki’s. She says that she doesn’t cook very often, but it turns out she’s pretty skilled when it comes to Japanese food.”
“Eh?”
Touko-san spoke and blinked in surprise. I was of that opinion too, but really, Shiki had cooked well enough to shame a chef. Shiki came from a distinguished family, and because of that her sense of taste was extraordinarily high class. For herself, she would eat anything; but I think that was because if she didn’t make it, then she could forgive any taste. Shiki cooking meant preparing something that she herself could tolerate, so it was really no wonder that her cooking skills went up as a result. - Kara no Kyoukai Chapter 5
Shiki's ability to cook at such an elite level, despite rarely practicing, reflects her broader capacity to master any skill with ease. It’s not simply that she’s good at cooking, rather, she refines any skill naturally, without needing formal training or deliberate effort.
Her refined sense of taste also mirrors her ability to evaluate and enhance things beyond just food. She doesn’t settle for mediocrity; her standards are naturally set at a level that would challenge professionals. The same principle applies to her combat ability, she doesn’t just rely on established techniques but constantly adapts and refines them for maximum efficiency. Whether it’s cooking, fighting, or any other discipline, Shiki’s innate talent, heightened by her self-awareness, enables her to instinctively learn, master, and surpass expectations in any field she engages with.
Shiki herself, in fact, describes her fighting style as an act of mental reconstruction: She reconfigures her body for combat, effectively becoming a different person. This principle, rooted in the Ryougi family's martial philosophy, pushes the concept of "Nothingness" beyond natural limits. By emptying her mind, she achieves near-perfect execution suited to the situation at hand:
"Aikido is just for fun. There's only one thing I've done since I was young."
"Since you were young, eh. I thought you were strong. It was you who let loose a high kick at the back of a fleeing opponent's head. I thought how you acted was different. It was because of that. So do you have anything like a finishing move?"
I ask the lamest questions. But Ryougi goes mmm, and falls into serious thought.
"I suppose I have something along those lines. I train by taking down everything using that as my premise, so if you call it a finishing move, it is one. But we aren't of that school. And it's originally a self-created style as well."
The thing you train is your mindset, Ryougi adds.
"You remake your body. From your breathing to the placement of your feet, awareness, thoughts, to be able to remake all of them for combat. Even the way of using your muscles changes, so it might feel like you become a different person.
I suppose tensing your body and mind as a fight starts, and while you are fighting, is the foundation of all martial arts. However, we followed only that too much, and as a result our path went too far." - Kara no Kyoukai Chapter 5
However, despite her lineage, Shiki outright states that she has never actually used her family's fighting style in battle. Instead, everything we've seen of her fighting, whether with a knife or hand-to-hand, is simply her replicating what she has observed:
"What, if you are strong then that's that. There wont be any instances where you go around getting bashed up like me. And you finished off those three guys in an instant. That's an incredible self-created style right there. "
When I spoke, remembering that refreshing instant of when I met this girl, Ryougi seems a bit surprised.
"That's different. I only copied what I had seen. More than that, there's never been an instance where I've used our house's school of fighting."
She nonchalantly spat out that frightening statement, then Ryougi collapsed onto the bed and fell asleep. - Kara no Kyoukai Chapter 5
This aligns with the idea that Shiki, by nature, can seamlessly adapt to any task at an exceptional level. In combat, she instinctively integrates the most efficient techniques necessary to achieve her goal, regardless of formal training.
Her hybrid knife-based fighting style is noted to incorporate elements of the Nanaya assassination techniques, to the point where her proficiency is nearly equal to that of Nanaya Shiki himself:
" A listless girl who who wears both Eastern and Western clothes by wearing a leather jacket on top of her kimono. A character that seems have to have taken only the best parts of two characters: Tohno Shiki's Mystic Eyes of Death Perception and Nanaya Shiki's Nanaya Techniques. Every movement is high-spec, with no opening in either her offense or defense. However, attacks that do not use either her knife or her katana deal surprisingly low damage." - Character Introduction from Tsukihime's fourth Character Popularity Poll.
"Her performance with the 17 dissections is almost the exact same as someone else's"- Character Introduction from Tsukihime's fourth Character Popularity Poll.
This is further reinforced by Shiki performing a variation of the Nanaya clan’s Seven Nights technique against Araya Souren:
--- Even that, is too slow. "Still in that crouched position, Shiki puts her hand behind her. Inside the belt that tightens the kimono is the second knife. As soon as she pulled the knife out to the side from her belt, she immediately threw it at the mage.
The knife blade penetrates the two-fold ward. Like a stone skimming the water the knife bounced twice off the top of the circle, and flew towards the mage's forehead. At the speed of a bullet.
"---?!"
The mage nimbly evades. The knife nicks the edge of his ear and disappears into the corridor, and the ear which had appeared to have evaded the attack has been carved off. Flesh, blood, broken bone. Brain fluid leaks out of the wound.
"--- Ugh."
The mage lets out a groan. Faster than that however --- he felt an impact that skewered his body. Thud, and a white darkness lands upon the mage's body. By the time the mage grasped that this was Shiki, who had charged straight at him after throwing the knife, the outcome of the fight had already been decided. Driving into his body shoulder first, Shiki's single blow had the same force as a cannon shell. Just that alone would have broken a few bones, but Shiki is clenching a silver knife in her hands. The knife is perfectly penetrating the centre of the mage's chest.
"Ug --- gh."
The mage coughs out blood. His blood was a sand-like powder. When Shiki removed the knife she straight away thrusts it towards the mage's neck. With all the strength in her two hands. The fight has already been decided, but she is desperately trying to deliver another critical blow. - Kara no Kyoukai Chapter 5
She throws a knife at him while simultaneously charging forward, executing her attack before Araya can even register the pain from the first strike. The knife’s trajectory is also unnatural, skimming the ground before suddenly accelerating upwards, which mirrors the Nanaya style’s ability to manipulate spatial perception to create openings.
More importantly, Shiki demonstrates the Nanaya’s famed ability to exploit weaknesses and overcome physically superior opponents. Araya Souren, thanks to his Stillness-based fighting style, is normally too fast for Shiki to even perceive:
The mage moves. If Shiki left an afterimage of a white kimono in the darkness of the night as she ran, the man melted into the night as he approached his prey. A demon-like speed that didn't even let you grasp the process of him approaching. He stops, next to the immobile Shiki the mage's black coat flaps in the air.
Shiki was unable to respond to the mage's unfelt approach. She had been looking --- she had been looking at the man advance towards her, but she can't perceive that the man is standing right next to her ---. - Kara no Kyoukai Chapter 5
However, Shiki uses her MEoDP to "kill" Araya's bounded fields, which he did not anticipate:
And with that she planted her knife in the floor. Out of the three circles the mage possessed, she had just 'killed' the outermost circle.
"--- Ignorance."
In an anxious manner the mage came forward. Another step, even though he approaches Shiki there is no change in Shiki.... The man's talismans have just shrunk from three to two. The mage clicks his tongue in exasperation. He hadn't considered the possibility that Shiki's Mystic Eyes of Death Perception would be so powerful. To think that she could kill a concept like a ward which had no form, or life, that kind of absolute power ---.- Kara no Kyoukai: Chapter 05
This forces him into an anxious, rushed assault, disrupting his Stillness and reducing his precision. Recognising this shift in behavior, Shiki acts preemptively, predicting his reaction and landing her finishing blow.
This versatility is then further enhanced by the fact that Shiki is an Origin-awakened being, someone who has attained a direct connection to the fundamental concept that defines their existence. In combat, this manifests as an instinctive, transcendent level of fighting ability, allowing her to move beyond natural limits with effortless precision. Her connection to her Origin grants her an innate understanding of battle, enabling her to act with absolute efficiency, as if guided by universal knowledge itself:
"Please, just let me finish. This might be the last chance we ever get to have a proper conversation. When those instincts surface, they also bring a slight change to the physical body. Of course, I don't mean in terms of appearance. Instead, it's the internal makeup of our bodies that changes. Apparently, it's some sort of return to our original forms. The point is, people don't even realise it's happening until it's over." - Kara no Kyoukai Chapter 7
This first quote explains how awakening an Origin causes a person’s body to revert to its original state, beyond ordinary human limitations. This supports the idea that Shiki instinctively moves beyond natural limits due to her alignment with her fundamental essence.
"Kokutou, do you believe in past lives?"
"You mean like, living as an animal before being born as a human? Hm, I suppose it'd be a maybe. While I can't deny it, it's not like I approve of it either."
"I couldn't think of an answer more befitting of you. Well, for the sake of discussion, let's hypothesise that they do exist. Even when speaking scientifically, there are grounds for believing in reincarnation. Every particle that exists in the universe eventually changes forms, right? So long as you don't factor in concepts like our minds and souls, everything will eventually be reincarnated as something else.
An Origin is a means of retracing that orderless rule. There are some mages who allow themselves to be possessed by their past lives in order to use their abilities. Basically, it's an attempt to bring the abilities you possessed before being born into the present. An Origin is a similar concept, but it exists on an even higher plane than that. If we possessed lives before our current ones, then it'd only make sense for that life to also have one previous to it. Even if you weren't born as a human in your past life, and even if you weren't a living being in the life before that, there lies a thread of existence that ties it all together. For every one of us, there exists a beginning of our soulsーa birthplace of our existences. However, the concept of living beings does not exist there.
All that exists is a genesis, a direction for causality to move in. Within the fount where all originates, an orientation toward something is born in a flash of lightning. That prerogative toward a certain something begins to flow, eventually taking a form suitable to it. Sometimes, it just so happens to be the form of a human being. Perhaps you could call it a driving force that emerged at the beginning of all things. It's an inescapable impulse to accomplish something born from within the chaos of the Fount of Origination. An absolute imperative for all that have been given form to fulfil their purpose. That impulse is what we mages refer to as an Origin.
Well, put simply, I guess calling it an instinct would be good enough. You know how some people are only attracted to children? They say stuff like that is caused by a traumatic instance in a person's childhood, but nothing that happened to a kid would be able to affect an adult's consciousness like that.
People like that have been that way since before they were born. Our souls are bound by the rigid shapes of our Origin. Even if we're aware of it, we cannot oppose the courses set for us during the foundation of our existence."
That thing she said at the end sounded a bit too extreme. Regardless,
there were also some parts that indubitably made sense. We humans engage in actions that we don't want to because we're unable to keep our urges in check.
For all things, be it plants or minerals, our lives are bound by a predetermined direction.
"Most people live their entire lives unaware of their Origins, though.
However, there are people who are born a bit too close to their Origins. Just like people with psychic powers, they possess extraordinary abilities, and as a result tend to be outcasts of society. By the way, Shiki constantly seeks death because her Origin is Emptiness, and the reason why Azaka refuses to be bound by rules is because hers is Taboo. Shiki's being driven by that impulse because she's too close, but Azaka's pretty much a normal girl, right? An Origin is only a cause, meaning it isn't ordinarily something that rules over an individual. Unless you become aware of it for whatever reason, that is."
She glanced at me with a keen look in her eyes. I'd already understood what she was trying to say.
"In other words, you lose the ability to go in a different direction once you realise your own Origin?"
"Exactly. An Origin is a current that has surged since the beginning of existence. The mere seventeen years that Shirazumi Lio possesses will only end up getting swept away. All he can do is surrender himself to that impulse over and over again. Consumption, huh? That's quite an unusual impulse he has. I'm not surprised that Araya wanted to keep a close eye on him.
Listen, Kokutou. If that's what his Origin is, then his past life was probably a creature that feasted on everything it could get its hands on. Those who have awakened their Origins will gain the past lives they have accumulated. He can't be considered a single human anymoreーhe's an entire pack of beasts. Things haven't taken a turn for the worse because his original personality is still holding on, but once that's gone, that pack of beasts is all that will remain. Well, that'd also be quite the interesting sight," she said with a sarcastic grin on her face. - Kara no Kyoukai Chapter 7
The discussion about reincarnation and Lio’s transformation clarifies that awakening an Origin grants access to the instincts and abilities accumulated through past existences. This reinforces why Shiki fights as if she possesses innate, universal knowledge. Her combat ability is not just personal talent but an expression of something far older and more fundamental. When someone awakens to their Origin, they do not just gain abilities from past lives or some accumulated experience; they become the highest possible expression of that fundamental current. This means that in any given situation, they are not limited to a single form or ability, they can tap into the full range of expressions that their Origin has taken across time, effectively making them superior to anything that remains within conventional boundaries.
Because an Origin is a metaphysical force that predates and transcends physical existence, an awakened being is no longer restricted by the usual limitations of strength, speed, or skill. Instead, they function as a living embodiment of their concept, meaning that in any given scenario, they can always manifest an aspect of their Origin that outperforms their opponent. It’s like having an infinite arsenal of expressions of a singular force, ensuring that there is always a way to be superior in a given domain.
Further proof of Origin-awakened beings having exceptional talents surpassing even conventional supernatural powers are Asagami and God's Word:
"You mean the arms of an adult? That's pretty amazing. "Distortion" depends on the object's size rather than its hardness. I would think it should take about seven days to bend something like the human arm. So, which way is it? Right? Left?"
"Does that matter?"
"Of course. It has something to do with the fulcrum. Even Earth has a direction of rotation, right? What, it's not constant? Hmm... does such a power actually exist? Then you shouldn't have anything to do with this person. This person has more than two channels. That unfit existence can probably rotate things in both directions. I have never heard of a case of someone having two channels and able to use them both at once; it's too powerful."- Kara no Kyoukai Chapter 3
The average person with such abilities would struggle for days just to bend a human arm, often restricted to a single direction. In contrast, Fujino’s power allows her to manipulate objects in multiple directions simultaneously, defying conventional limits. This extraordinary ability stems from her awakened Origin, which enables her to distort reality itself.
Fujino’s ability is not merely a supernatural trait but something deeply rooted in fundamental laws of reality. The idea that she possesses "more than two channels" suggests that she functions outside of normal constraints, further supporting the idea that an awakened Origin taps into a greater, conceptual force rather than being a simple mutation or ESP ability. The guidebook does in fact reveals that her family's tampering with her ability turned it into a hybrid ability that also falls within Magecraft:
In this story, Asagami Fujino is an psychic power user, but since she was tampered with somewhat, her ability falls between psychic power and magecraft.Psychic power is normally an incidental occurrence, a sudden mutation limited to one generation.- Garden of sinners Pamphlet: Kara no Kyoukai Settings Glossary - Psychic Power [other]
And Touko confirmed this made her power even stronger:
"A family totally opposite of that of Ryougi, which tries so hard to make ones with power. But what's sad is that her power became stronger by doing that. Magi from in and around Egypt stitch their eyes shut to keep their Mana within them. What's the difference between them and Asagami Fujino?" — Kara no Kyoukai, Chapter 3
For God's Word:
According to the rumours, God's Word never harms other people. In the first place, he isn't even a mage. He doesn't have any latent aptitude for magecraft, nor is he descended from a family of mages. He was born with some genetic mutation, just like Azaka was. Similarly, just as Azaka's only ability is to control flames, his sole gift is the command over language. However, because these abilities are part of their innate disposition, they are capable of reaching heights that even bloodlines spanning generations such as mine cannot hope to achieve. In that sense, God's Word is a monster. It took him only ten years to attain those heights.
The magecraft he utilises is exactly as his moniker suggests: God's Word. He has complete command over every language spoken by any race or tribe that currently roams the world. When I say complete, I don't just mean that he can speak them. He knows everything that has ever emerged from them, beginning from their conception. Their history, their beliefs, all of it. There exists no word that he cannot speak, and there exists no race of man that is unknown to him. However, he did not acquire this knowledge by travelling the world. God's Word learned only a single language, and his understanding of every other one is nothing more than a consequence of that.
It was God's Word that proved all of them wrong. He showed that it wasn't only our planet that was more powerful in the Age of Gods, but also our language. If God confused the languages of man, then what was it like before that? Indeed, mankind had but a single language of communication back then. Could a language truly give meaning to and speak of every single phenomenon in our world? If it truly existed, then it would have to be a formless language. It would not be a language used to communicate with fellow men, but a language that derived its meaning through a dialogue with the world itself.
God feared the word of man, so he confused our tongues and granted us a language with form. We thought we were being granted wisdom, but we were only robbed of the truth instead. That lost truth is what God's Word has learned, the original language that was shared among all who dwelled in this world before the Tower of Babel. We call this the Unified Language, and God's Word is the only mage capable of replicating it. The Master of Babel. The ability to communicate with every single being that lives is none other than a gate to the Fount, to God himself. - Kara no Kyoukai Chapter 6
Despite being born with no aptitude for magecraft, God's Word achieved mastery over a fundamental, abstract language in only ten years. Said language can hypnotize "all of creation" and directly communicate with the world itself on an ontological level:
"Isn't that useless then? What's the point of it all if no one can even reply to him?"
"If it were just a normal language, then yes. The fact that he can communicate with beasts and rocks doesn't mean that he's speaking to them directly. Instead, he speaks to the world itself. Think of it like an ontological hierarchy. As long as 'I' exist, there will always be an Aozaki Touko above me that exists within the world itself. If he were to use the Unified Language on me, I would have no way of resisting. If I were to reject his words, that'd be equal to denying the fact that I exist in this world. The very words he utter become an irreversible truth. God's Word is capable of placing all of creation under complete hypnosis. The memories that we humans possess, are also recorded by the world itself. It's a similar concept to the Akashic Records, but this is a wave phenomenon that exists on a lower level than it. You see, one of the possible methods of deciphering it is the Unified Language. That's why Kurogiri's able to gather memories that have already been forgotten. He isn't drawing their forgotten memories out of their brains, but rather from the record the world stores of the past. In the present day and age, he's the only person capable of accessing the various recordings of the past that our world has kept in store. - Kara no Kyoukai Chapter 6
His ability is not a learned skill but an intrinsic part of his being, proving that an awakened Origin grants access to knowledge and abilities that completely transcend conventional supernatural methodologies.
There are even more examples in Tsukihime, like Nanaya Shiki himself and Kouma Kishima, but I'm trying to make this short and keep it constrained to KnK.
Ryougi Shiki’s Origin is Nothingness, referring to the abstract void from which all things are manifested. Since the Root/One unifies all possible things, but those things exist only as potential, it can be understood as a state of true nothingness. The Ryougi family name itself directly references the division of the One into Yin and Yang:
Taiji [Others]
A philosophy originated in ancient China, a graphical representation of the Yin-Yang theory. It attempts to capture the essence of everything on a conceptual level: those that are active are defined as Yang (white), and the opposite are defined as Yin (black).
The Taiji symbolizes opposing concepts such as day and night, light and darkness, male and female. At the same time, you may also call it a condensed version of the ever-changing, dynamic World.
Furthermore, there is a dot of Yin in Yang, and conversely a dot of Yang in Yin. This indicates that the distinction between Yin and Yang is not absolute. There is darkness even in light.
Taiji is the "one" at the beginning, the Yin and Yang that divide the "one" are called Liangyi (Ryougi). - Kara no Kyoukai Special Pamphlet - Encyclopedia: Taiji
This division of Taiji into Liangyi (Ryougi) suggests that Shiki embodies the forces that contain the greatest number of possible attributes:
“Hmph. Is being unified as one really so desirable, Araya? Light and darkness were not divided to oppose each other, but because they are the attributes that encompass the greatest number of things. - Kara no Kyoukai Chapter 5
Unlike Nanaya Shiki or Kouma Kishima, whose combat styles are based on singular, highly specialized concepts (Death and Destruction, respectively), Ryougi Shiki’s abilities stem from the dynamic balance of Yin and Yang. This makes her incredibly versatile, adapting seamlessly to any task, including combat.
While Nanaya perceives Death as an endpoint, Ryougi’s perception is far broader. She does not simply see Death, she perceives the flaws within existence itself through her Yin aspect, which are then removed with absolute precision through her Yang aspect.
If Nanaya Shiki is the ultimate assassin, then Ryougi Shiki is the ultimate regulating force of reality itself, embodying the eternal duality of Yin and Yang. Rather than simply killing, she cuts away the unnecessary aspects of existence, striving to return all things to the perfect equilibrium of the One.
While Nanaya's fighting style is built around maximum efficiency in ending life, Ryougi is an ever-adapting force, one that corrects the world by integrating its aspects into herself. This directly ties into her ability to instantly copy and perfect any skill she commits to.
----
To recap, not only was Shiki specifically built with hundreds upon hundreds of "softwares" that allow her to excel at any task she commits to, but she actively awakens and draws her fighting skills from her Origin of Nothingness, a force that embodies the balance between light and darkness, precision and power, defense and offense, further enhancing her versatility and adaptability. Origins are explicitly beyond any supernatural power, granting abilities on a creation-wide scale, as they serve as fundamental directives that have shaped entities and objects across every reincarnation throughout history.
At its core, an Origin is a cosmic force that shapes reality itself. Aligning with one’s Origin allows the user to tap into the primordial state from which all existence emerges, granting the ability to bend the laws of reality in their favor.
For Ryougi, this means that her transcendental speed, governed by the interplay of light and darkness, automatically balances the flow of existence to ensure that she always outpaces and overpowers her target, unless:
- The opponent embodies a more fundamental concept (e.g., Araya Souren’s Stillness).
- Shiki is not in an ideal mindset to fully utilize her abilities.
You know what this means, right? The infamous "Can Shiki kill Servants?" debate is a joke. We've been lied to because most people who argue that Servants are stronger than Origin-awakened beings haven't actually read Kara no Kyoukai or understood what an Origin truly is. Instead, they blindly follow Nasu’s inconsistent interviews, which often contradict the deeper lore in the novels. The truth is that awakening to an Origin isn’t just a power-up, it is a fundamental transcendence of physical existence.
Servants are historical figures crystallized into combat units. They are bounded beings with set parameters, skills, and limitations. Even the strongest Servants are still just products of human myth and history. Their saint graphs define their abilities, and they are locked into the feats they accomplished in life, unable to surpass their own legend.
In contrast, Origin-awakened beings embody the fundamental forces that shape existence itself. Origins are the underlying conceptual currents that dictate how reality forms and functions. Everything that exists, including humans, animals, and even the Servants themselves, is just a product of these currents. When someone awakens to their Origin, they return to the purest, most absolute expression of that force, gaining access to an infinite number of forms and abilities that naturally surpass anything bound by human history.
The biggest lie people believe is that Servants are the ceiling of power in the verse, when in reality, they are just one specific type of being that follows strict system rules. Origin-awakened beings, on the other hand, operate on a level that lets them surpass any opponent by drawing on the infinite range of expressions within their conceptual current. They aren’t restricted by class containers, saint graphs, or fixed abilities: They simply become the ultimate form of their Origin, ensuring they are always superior in their domain.
And if people actually read the novels instead of parroting secondhand power-scaling nonsense, they would realize that Origin-awakened beings massively outclass Servants in every fundamental way.
Even Nasu himself admitted in 2007 that he was an entirely different person back when he wrote Kara no Kyoukai, and that his current self was limited to patchwork continuations that butchered the core themes of the novel. So why the hell are you taking his later statements as gospel, when the man himself told you he deliberately changed direction? The novel itself makes it clear that Origins exist on a level absurdly beyond the Throne of Heroes.
If people actually engaged with the source material instead of clinging to selective interviews, they would understand that Origin-awakened beings aren’t just stronger than Servants, they exist on a completely different level of power.
We even saw Shiki in Fate/Extra slaughter 99 Servants, despite the Moon Cell automatically nerfing anyone who would make the Holy Grail War unfair, such as Gilgamesh. Yet, even with those restrictions, it still took the war’s champion to even slow her down. CCC further reinforces this by treating a pseudo-Origin Awakening (one based on humanity, which Araya himself explicitly noted is nothing compared to Ryougi’s) as an unfathomable power-up for Servants. This power boost allowed them to stand up to BB and would have disintegrated their very structure if not for their Mystic Codes.
And yes, CCC explicitly states this as an Origin Awakening, a phenomenon so alien that not even the person undergoing it is normally aware of it, representing their Original form. Rani even describes it as a “black box,” mirroring how Touko described Ryougi’s body as being "full of black boxes" due to her Origin being connected to the One itself, making her naturally excel at everything:

"Her body is full of black boxes so I can't even make anything similar." - Kara no Kyoukai Chapter 5
Since Akasha contains all possible information and outcomes, it inherently holds an infinite number of "black boxes", each representing a different potential reality, power, or event. Ryougi Shiki, with her Origin tied directly to Akasha, embodies this concept of infinite potential and unknown possibilities.
Touko further explains the nature of the comparison between Origins and Black Boxes:
"The reason I got into doll making you see, was to reach 「out for the perfect」through the perfect human body.
Adversely he chose to try and reach 「out for the」through the soul, or in other words, an existence that is 「there」but 「not there」, like a cat inside an unfathomable box. The box has a definite form, so you can't see inside it, but the formless soul can be seen into. - Kara no Kyoukai Chapter 5
The soul, much like a cat in an unfathomable box, represents something that is present yet unknowable, full of potential and hidden depths.
The truth is that Shiki has always existed on a fundamentally higher plane than funny Servants, that has never changed.
The perfect equilibrium Shiki's Origin awakening strives for by balancing Light-oriented and Dark-oriented forces is then fully realized when Shiki wields a katana and activates her Self-Hypnosis, awakening Void Shiki’s personality while maintaining control. This symbolizes not just the duality of Yin and Yang, but the actual perfection of the One itself.
I’ve already made a thread specifically breaking down her Self-Hypnosis, so I’ll just link that rather than dragging this one out. But in summary: SH Shiki embodies the One itself, allowing her to unify all of existence through her killing intent. With this, she bypasses physical distance, attacks without temporal constraints, foresees the future and even harms non-physical beings without relying on her Mystic Eyes of Death Perception. Again, you can find all info in the link I provided.

Now, this is just one huge list of feats and statements proving she is superhuman. Starting from her physical strength:
-In Chapter 5, Shiki lifts a heavy bundle that numbs Mikiya’s arms with ease. Despite her slender frame, she performs this act effortlessly:
The bundle wasn’t even one meter long, but was heavy as if it were made of steel. While it didn’t seem like a very bulky bundle when I left my house, my arm had gone numb after walking a hundred meters. While I relaxed the muscles in both my arms, Shiki came walking over.
Showing a rare bright face, Shiki lifted the bundle leaning against the wall. Holding the package that was heavy even for me with just one hand, Shiki began to loosen the string that held the bag shut. - Kara no Kyoukai Chapter 5
In another scene, Shiki demonstrates not only incredible strength but also a remarkable control over her movements. When she grabs a thug’s arm with ease, she spins him around as if he were weightless. The thug’s body spins in the air, crashing to the ground, unconscious from the sheer force of her motion. Her movements are so fluid and natural that they appear almost in slow motion:
With her thin arm the girl grabs his arm. She pulls with no effort. As if he were weightless, the boy spins around in a full circle and falls to the ground head first. Maybe that's one of those judo throws. The movement was very quick, but it was so natural that it looked like it was in slow motion. - Kara no Kyoukai Chapter 5
When two more thugs attack her, Shiki's swift, calculated actions knock them both unconscious in mere seconds. She effortlessly pushes one to the ground with a single palm, incapacitating him without even a wasted motion. The other thug tries to flee but is swiftly taken down with a perfectly executed roundhouse kick:
The other two leap at the girl. She pushes one of their chests with her palm, and with just that her opponent was down. Even though it took me so much violence just to knock out one guy, this girl made two people lose consciousness without a single wasted move. I hazard about 5 seconds have passed. Just like how I realized this fact, it seems the one left over also realized that his opponent wasn't ordinary."Ooowah!", he screamed while beginning to flee. The girl kicked the head of the one who turned his back to flee. The clean roundhouse kick didn't even make noise and knocked out the last one."Hmph, he was a rockhead, what an idiot." - Kara no Kyoukai Chapter 5
Even with a severely injured arm, blood-soaked and seemingly useless, Shiki effortlessly knocks out a security guard with a single move, demonstrating the overwhelming physical power she possesses:
Broad Bridge is distorted like it has been squeezed by a giant hand. After coming here in the storm in Touko-san's buggy and arguing with the guard, Shiki shows up from under the bridge with a blood-soaked arm. The guard runs up to Shiki, but she tackles him and knocks him unconscious. Shiki says this with a pale face. There were many things I wanted to say, but they all disappear when I see how weak she is. I run to help her, but Shiki refuses and does not even let me support her.
"So you managed with just one arm, huh, Shiki?"
"Did you stop the bleeding on that arm? It doesn't seem to be, at least."
"Yeah, I killed it 'cause it was useless. You can make an arm, right? You're a puppet master, after all."- Kara no Kyoukai Chapter
Even when Lio Shirazumi, having awakened his Origin and transcended human limits, launches a brutal attack, Shiki stands her ground. She blocks his knife strike with her own despite his enhanced speed and strength, proving that she is far beyond human in terms of raw combat ability:
The snake shed its coiling form, erupting into a ferocious beast. With an explosive burst, it launched itself towards Shiki's head, its knife aimed at her skull. A metallic clang echoed as their blades met, Shiki's own knife raised in defence. For a fleeting moment, their gazes locked, as if their weapons were extensions of themselves. Shiki's gaze burned with cold hostility, while the monster's eyes blazed with manic glee. With a twisted grin, he leaped back, landing with the agility of a spider. A single, fluid motion had put six metres between them. He braced himself on his hands and knees, panting like a beast, a creature clearly beyond the bounds of humanity. - Kara no Kyoukai Chapter 7
Most impressively, she strikes Araya Souren with the force of a "cannon shell". The impact of her shoulder alone would have been enough to break his bones, but she follows up by driving a silver knife directly through his chest. Araya, a figure of superhuman strength himself, is still damaged by Shiki’s physical power. The fact that her blow is strong enough to shatter his bones demonstrates Shiki’s raw physicality:
Driving into his body shoulder first, Shiki's single blow had the same force as a cannon shell. Just that alone would have broken a few bones, but Shiki is clenching a silver knife in her hands.
The knife is perfectly penetrating the centre of the mage's chest. - Kara no Kyoukai Chapter 5
Jumps off a bridge into the parking lot below with no damage at all:
Fujino murmurs, but then is astonished. Shiki did get away! Unbelievably, Shiki has jumped off the bridge down to the ocean. The sound of a window being broken is heard. What athletic ability... Shiki went off the bridge and into the parking lot right underneath it. "What a ridiculous person you are." - Kara no Kyoukai Chapter 3
Asagami’s exclamation of disbelief and admiration, calling her "ridiculous," emphasizes that this is an incredible feat, one beyond the capabilities of a normal human.
Casually jumps between buildings' rooftops, which speaks to her leg strength:
The sun had long vanished when I awoke. From the rooftop where I'd sought refuge, I leaped across to the neighbouring building. Restricted to authorised personnel only, this makeshift bed was a risky venture. I'd scaled the nearby rental building, seeking solitude on this deserted rooftop. This absurd routine had become my reality for over a week. - Kara no Kyoukai Chapter 7
Shiki’s body is described as being exceptionally durable, able to recover from severe injuries in an incredibly short time. In a mere week, she fully heals from wounds that would normally take much longer to recover from, showcasing her extraordinary resilience. This reinforces her superhuman physical condition, as even her internal organs and ribs, typically slow to heal, are restored in an impressively brief period:
My injuries were far more severe, but my body seems more durable than most and I completely healed from my wounds within a week. - Kara no Kyoukai Chapter 5
Shiki exhibits an extraordinary level of pain tolerance and can continue fighting even under intense physical strain. During her battle with Asagami, her arm is bent unnaturally, yet she continues to press forward without hesitation. The sound of her arm breaking is followed by a swift, focused attack, showing that despite the injury, Shiki's combat instincts and ability to think clearly remain unharmed. She immediately prepares her knife again, moving faster than her opponent can react, her resolve unbroken by the pain:
Fujino hesitates a bit and then bends. With a cracking sound, Shiki's left arm breaks. Her neck is next; but when Fujino looks... Shiki is already within range. The path that the knife takes is like a flash of light. A bright swing that leaves a lingering trace in the darkness. The knife that strikes without hesitation, however, does not hit Fujino. She ducks, avoiding the swing that was aimed at her neck... no, it was just an accident. Asagami Fujino only looked away because she was scared of Shiki, who was running towards her with a broken arm.
"Damn..."
Shiki readies her knife again. Fujino frantically stares at Shiki's body.
"... Go away...!"
Shiki's movement is faster than Fujino's scream. Shiki runs unhesitatingly into the darkness. One should be surprised not at her athletic ability, but at her quick thinking in choosing to escape. - Kara no Kyoukai Chapter 3
Then, Shiki’s ability to keep fighting despite significant blood loss is demonstrated. After a brutal injury, she takes the time to apply a makeshift tourniquet with a sleeve from her jacket to stop the bleeding. Though the injury leaves her arm numb and likely non-functional, she forces herself to stay awake and sharp. Despite feeling weak and on the brink of unconsciousness, she clears her head from the effects of blood loss, grips her knife tightly in her remaining hand, and gets back up to continue the fight:
Shiki takes off her jacket and cuts away the sleeve. She wraps the cloth around her left upper arm to staunch the bleeding. A crude treatment. There's no feeling in the arm that was twisted. It will probably never move. Shiki feels a chill at that fact.
She is losing blood quickly. She feels her consciousness slipping away....I'm hot-blooded anyway. If I lose some, it will just make me think more clearly…
After shaking her head clear of the effect of the blood loss, Shiki gets up. She grips her knife tightly in her right hand. - Kara no Kyoukai Chapter 3
And despite her arm being soaked in blood, Shiki casually survives the entire collapse of the bridge:
The parking lot shakes. The ocean in the middle of the storm appears inside of Fujino's mind. Withstanding the burning in her brain, Fujino creates a fulcrum on either side of the bridge...... And bends...
BOOM!
A tumultuous roar, like the crash of lightning, is heard. The metal foundation creaks and screams. The ground tilts and the ceiling starts to collapse. Fujino blankly stares at the building that is about to give way. The girl on top of her fell away as the world suddenly tilted. There is a storm outside, with the ocean below. If she falls without being able to grab onto something, she will surely die. Fujino takes command of her body, which is even having trouble breathing. She tells it that this place is going to collapse, so she has to get away from here. Dragging her nearly burned-out body, Fujino exits the parking lot. The shopping mall is relatively free of damage. The square corridor is now a rhombus - Kara no Kyoukai Chapter 3
"Are you in pain?"At the end of the pain, Shiki is standing. She has a knife in one hand. Fujino turns over to face Shiki.
Shiki's ability to continue fighting despite internal injuries is also displayed during her confrontation with Araya Souren:
Ryougi Shiki looked at the Magus with her sword still in the swinging position. A single line of fresh blood spilled out from her lips. She herself had not received a wound. However, it was just the wounds from last night reopening. Ryougi Shiki’s body had a few broken ribs and some organ damage; just walking caused regurgitated blood to flow out of her mouth. Even with such wounds, she still unveiled an impressive dance with her blade. - Kara no Kyoukai Chapter 5
Her broken ribs and damaged organs make each movement agonizing, yet she presses on, even continuing to fight with impressive skill. Her ability to continue swinging her sword and moving fluidly with these serious wounds highlights the depth of her strength and willpower, far beyond that of any normal person. Araya himself acknowledges that she should not even be able to move, but Shiki proves him wrong with her indomitable will:
Even if Ryougi Shiki is awake, she cannot do anything. You do not need to watch her, as it will be difficult for her to even get up with the wounds she has sustained. Even if she awoke, she still could not move her body.” - Kara no Kyoukai Chapter 5
Finally, when Lio wounds her near fatality, Shiki's remarkable control over her body is emphasized. Even at death's door, Shiki could have extended her life significantly by severing nerves near her wounds, an action beyond the capability of a typical person. This kind of precise self-manipulation highlights her supernatural understanding of human physiology and the extent to which her mental state influences her physical condition. In this instance, her body is not merely responding to external circumstances but is instead subject to her active control, showing that her body can endure far more than most would ever imagine:
Lio's corpse showed no bleeding; the vibrant crimson staining the warehouse floor was solely hers. With limbs torn and flesh ripped, her life would likely be measured in mere minutes. Or perhaps, as Ryougi Shiki, she could potentially extend that time until help arrived. But she made no move. A sigh escaped her lips as she relinquished the knife, collapsing onto the cold floor.
"Ah," she breathed. She extended her breaths, severing the nerves in her bleeding wounds. Perhaps she would be able to conserve enough energy to call for help by resting like this.
"But... what's the point?" she murmured, her gaze drifting skyward.- Kara no Kyoukai Chapter 7
Nerves are microscopic and deeply integrated into the body’s structure. Under normal circumstances, no human, no matter how skilled, can voluntarily shut off their pain or stop their body's physiological responses to injury in such a precise manner at will.
All of these examples illustrate Shiki's transcendent abilities, showcasing how her fighting instincts, pain tolerance, and mental strength allow her to overcome even the most severe injuries. Her combat skills are so ingrained in her being that they operate almost independently of her physical condition.
Now, about her speed:
Shiki starts to run. Her speed is incredible, despite the pooling water and violent wind. It should not take more than three seconds to reduce the distance between them from ten meters to zero. Enough time to bring Fujino's frail body to the ground and stab her in her heart. But even that speed cannot match the speed of sight. Shiki has to close in on her target while Fujino only has to look at her target. For the two, that difference of three seconds is too long. - Kara no Kyoukai Chapter 3
This example of Shiki's running speed is often underestimated and posited as an anti-feat, but this is actually wrong. The environmental challenges make it far more impressive than it might appear at first glance: Shiki runs 10 meters in 3 seconds under severe conditions, pooling water and violent wind. These conditions create significant resistance: waterlogged ground reduces traction, while strong winds hinder forward movement. Elite athletes would struggle to perform under such conditions, yet Shiki runs with apparent ease, emphasizing her extraordinary physical capabilities.
Additionally, the distinction between travel speed and combat speed is important. Travel speed involves sustained movement over a distance, while combat speed refers to instantaneous, high-intensity actions, often enhanced by techniques or abilities. Shiki’s travel speed in this instance is already remarkable, but her combat speed operates on a different level entirely, as demonstrated by her reflexes in battle (such as evading Fujino’s telekinetic powers).
The scene where Shiki casually slaughters a horde of undead is a perfect example of her combat prowess:
"Hou, are they saying they want to go for it?" Ryougi spoke as if smiling and pulls a knife out from inside her jumper. Someone slowly came into the lounge. The lightly treading shadow that appeared without making a sound, it was a middle-aged man who would have belonged anywhere. His blank face and empty eyes paradoxically let us sense that this is a dangerous person. That man who I thought I had seen somewhere tried to attack us straight away. Like some puppet being controlled by its strings, without any warning. But Ryougi easily kills him. One person. Two people. Three people. Four people. She kills the mansion residents who are flooding in through the front door with an easy grace that makes it look like she is dancing. There were no useless motions in that dance. Before long the lounge was full of corpses. Ryougi grabs my hand and starts running. "It's not good to be in this place for long, let's go.
"Ryougi is Ryougi. I --- had become a little unsteady after seeing my parents' corpses, but even then I couldn't forgive this situation. Why --- why is this brat killing people for no reason?
"Ryougi, you --- !"
"Let's talk later. By the way, those things aren't human. Even I can't tell how many times they've died. Things like those, they aren't humans or even corpses but mere dolls. This one and that one, they all want to die so I'm feeling sick.
"For the first time --- With a face full of hatred Ryougi runs. I hesitated for a second, then stepped over the corpses of the crowd Ryougi had murdered and came out into the corridor. When I came out to the corridor, there were already five or so people on the ground. In the time that I spent looking from one to another, Ryougi was cutting down a somethingeth human in front of number 8.
--- Strong. It's overwhelming. For some reason these don't seem like they came from the east building, but they don't move slowly like the zombies you see in movies. With a human-like quickness they leap towards us. Regardless, Ryougi doesn't bat an eyelash and easily takes care of them. Is they reason they aren't bleeding because they aren't human, like Ryougi said? Killing people without spilling a drop of blood, Ryougi looked like a white god of death as she opened a path to the central lobby. I look towards the end of the pack of people Ryougi is cutting down. - Kara no Kyoukai Chapter 5
These undead are described as being faster and more agile than typical zombies, yet Shiki dispatches them effortlessly. This reinforces the idea that her abilities extend far beyond ordinary human limits, as she can cut down enemies with grace and efficiency that make the act seem effortless. Not only is she physically superior, but her technique and coordination are on a level that renders these challenges trivial.
For more direct evidence of her actual combat speed being crazy, there is Shiki's ability to dodge Fujino's Distortion, a sight-based attack, emphasizing her insane reflexes and inhuman agility. Fujino's power is a spatial distortion that acts like a twisting force, affecting the target once it is within her line of sight. Normally, if someone is targeted by this ability, it’s almost impossible to dodge, unless you can move faster than Fujino can perceive and react to you. Shiki manages to escape the attack not by simply outrunning it, but by using her speed to briefly leap out of Fujino’s sight. This demonstrates instantaneous decision-making and instinctual action at a level beyond human capabilities:
Fujino's eyes glimmer. The left eye for a rotation to the left. The right eye for a rotation to the right. Taking Shiki's head and left leg as the fulcrums, she twists. A strange sensation occurs instantaneously. The moment Shiki feels the invisible power upon her, she jumps explosively to one side. But the power on Shiki does not weaken. Fujino's power is not a projectile weapon. Even if one gets away from one round, it is impossible to get completely away from it whilst in her vision....... Damn......!! Shiki realizes Fujino's power is stronger than she thought. She runs. As if to escape from her vision, Shiki runs in a circle around Fujino.
"Do you think you can get awa-" Fujino murmurs, but then is astonished. Shiki did get away! Unbelievably, Shiki has jumped off the bridge down to the ocean. The sound of a window being broken is heard. What athletic ability... Shiki went off the bridge and into the parking lot right underneath it. - Kara no Kyoukai Chapter 3
This feat is outright insane. The moment Shiki feels the sensation, the attack is already affecting her body, yet she still reacts and evades explosively. Since Asagami’s ability is sight-based and instant, Shiki should have been twisted before she could move. Yet, through sheer speed, reflexes, and Origin-driven instinct, she defies that reality and escapes.
Even when injured and weakened from blood loss, Shiki maintains her ridiculous combat prowess. Fujino’s Distortions are so fast they instantly deform physical objects, as seen when she obliterates a stack of materials in an instant:
The stack of materials Shiki is hiding behind is instantly smashed. At that instant... a white figure streaks out of the wreckage - Kara no Kyoukai Chapter 3
Yet Shiki can counter these Distortions by reacting faster than they can manifest, all while not at her peak condition:
"... I see. ...... You must be abnormal."
Fujino can only think this. She looks at Shiki and bends. Her vision distorts. The fulcrums created on Shiki's head and leg each rotate in opposite directions and twist Shiki's body like a piece of carpet.
... It should have twisted her.
Shiki, whose left arm is bleeding, nullifies Fujino's "distortion" just by swinging the knife in her right hand. No...... she kills it.
"It's hard to see that without form, but you used your power too many times. Now I can finally see it. Your power is a spiral of red and green. It's really... beautiful."
Fujino does not understand what Shiki is saying. The only thing she realizes is that Shiki will surely kill her now. Fujino repeatedly prays.
Bend, bend, bend, bend!
As Fujino glares, Shiki swings her knife and eliminates the power. The pain in Fujino's stomach is about to go over its limit.
"Who...... are you?"
Shiki answers Fujino's fear with infinitely deep eyes.
"Everything in existence has an imperfection. Especially humans, but even in air, will, and time. It's natural to have an end if it has a beginning. My eyes can see the death of things. They're special, like yours."
Shiki looks at Fujino with those ominous eyes that Fujino felt before.
"That's why... if one exists, I could even kill a God."
Shiki runs. As gracefully as if she were walking. She approaches Fujino and pushes her down to the ground. Shiki straddles her. Fujino's throat trembles at facing Death so close to her. - Kara no Kyoukai Chapter 3
Shiki’s ability to evade and act faster than Fujino’s Distortion, despite it twisting the very space she physically moves in, is a result of my earlier explanation about Origins bending reality to ensure that their domains (Which transcends physical reality) are applied consistently as long as the user is aligned with them. Shiki's Origin of Nothingness plays a crucial role in her combat adaptability. Since her Origin represents the perfect balance between opposing forces, light and dark, motion and stillness, form and void, she instinctively counteracts spatial distortions by maintaining an internal equilibrium, allowing her to move freely even in warped space. Unlike an ordinary fighter who would be caught in the twisting force, Shiki’s innate ability to harmonize with the flow of combat enables her to find the precise moment and angle to escape. This isn’t just a feat of speed or reaction time; it’s an instinctual mastery of movement within distorted reality, showing that her combat prowess transcends conventional physics.
Moving on, Shiki’s speed and lethal intent in the fight with Lio are emphasized as beyond his capabilities to comprehend, even as a monster with enhanced senses:
"Who..."
"...Huh?" The monster couldn't comprehend it. Ryougi Shiki's actions, executed with an impassive face and only her blue eyes gleaming, were imperceptible to him. Her movements, as swift as a predator stalking its prey, were beyond the human eye's capacity to perceive. Even with the monster's heightened senses, he couldn't track her movements. The knife that had severed his arm was now aimed at his neck.
"...the hell did you say you'll kill?" - Kara no Kyoukai Chapter 7
The first part of the passage establishes the overwhelming difference in speed between them. Lio, despite being a monster with heightened sensory abilities, cannot track Shiki’s movements. Her actions are described as “imperceptible,” which means even someone with superhuman abilities like Lio cannot react fast enough to perceive or counter her. His internal acknowledgment, "You really are the real deal," is a recognition that Shiki, when fully serious, is an apex predator that even someone like Lio cannot hope to defeat.
Later on, despite being severely wounded and on the brink of death due to blood loss, Shiki is still able to dispatch Lio, who, after awakening his Origin of Consumption, has transcended the physical limitations of normal beings, even surpassing the most powerful predators:
The end was shockingly abrupt. As Lio's arm lunged for her neck, she severed it. Without hesitation, she then severed both his legs. With a swift, merciless motion, she plunged her knife into his body, which momentarily floated like a balloon, before slamming him to the ground. The knife, a cruel tombstone, pierced his heart. He gasped once, a final breath, and then it was over. Lio's face remained frozen in shock, too stunned to comprehend the fate that had befallen him as his life functions ceased. - Kara no Kyoukai Chapter 7
Shiki’s attacks are described as so fast and precise that Lio does not even realise what has happened until it is too late. This points to her incomprehensible speed. Even against an opponent whose abilities have far surpassed the physical limits of an animal, Shiki’s severs his arm and legs, plunges her knife into his body, and delivers a fatal blow to his heart, all in a single, fluid motion. This scene is impactful because Shiki accomplishes this while in a state of severe physical distress. She’s not just injured; she is bleeding out, with torn limbs and a body on the brink of collapse. Despite these conditions, she manages to finish the fight in an instant. This suggests that her combat abilities transcend even the limits of her physical condition, illustrating her exceptional skill and lethal intent:
The third time, her leg was torn. A sickening squelch followed as concrete soaked with blood. The claws, embedded deep in her bone, stained her foot and the floor, making even standing excruciating. Indeed, merely standing brought agony.
Blood loss clouded her vision, her body teetering on the brink of collapse.
A sigh escaped her lips as she relinquished the knife, collapsing onto the cold floor.- Kara no Kyoukai Chapter 7
As if that wasn't enough already, Shiki did this while being under the effects of a drug that Lio gave her that made her unable to move her muscles initially:
My memory was fuzzy, but it seems I was done in by Shirazumi Lio. My hands were bound, and my whole body felt numb and weak, as if injected with some strange drug. My mind swam, unable to grasp anything concrete.
Handcuffed, I lay on the unforgiving floor, eyes open yet unseeing. - Kara no Kyoukai Chapter 7
"Awake already, Princess? You're quite the eager one," he sneered.
"Seems the drugs weren't enough. Should've used this from the beginning."
He yanked my arm and plunged the needle deep. Numbness crept in, eclipsing any pain. Paralyzed and chained, I could only glare at him with impotent fury.
"Good. That fiery gaze," he hissed. "That's the Ryougi I remember. Don't worry, it's just a muscle relaxant. Need you nice and still for a while." - Kara no Kyoukai Chapter 7
With that, I turned away. My body numb from the drugs, my torn left hand throbbing, I moved past Shirazumi Lio like a stranger. He stood rooted to the spot, his breaths ragged as he watched my retreating figure.
My arms still functioned. When the creature lunged again, it would undoubtedly meet its demise. - Kara no Kyoukai Chapter 7
So one can only imagine how absurdly weakened Shiki was when she blitz-stomped Lio.
Lio Shirazumi’s Origin of Consumption is a major focal point in this comparison. Once fully awakened, Lio doesn’t just transcend human limitations: He surpasses the very boundaries of natural existence itself. His Origin transforms him into a predator beyond the capabilities of even the strongest creatures, including Nrvnqsr Chaos’s beasts. Unlike typical monstrous entities, Lio’s abilities aren’t merely physical; they are conceptual, allowing him to operate beyond the natural laws that govern all creatures of flesh and bone:
The enemy's prowess had escalated beyond recognition. Unnatural speed and precision surpassed any creature of flesh and bone. - Kara no Kyoukai Chapter 7
That line leaves little room for interpretation: Lio isn't just stronger than humans or animals; he outright exceeds any being that possesses a physical form, which naturally includes vampires and True Ancestors. Given that his abilities are conceptual in nature, this isn't just a matter of him being "really strong", he transcends the conventional limits of predation.
This conceptual nature is what places Lio above even vampires and True Ancestors. All vampires, regardless of their strength, are fundamentally bound by their need to consume blood to survive. This instinctive drive makes them fall under the domain of Lio’s Origin, which embodies absolute predation. Unlike a mere physical predator, Lio's existence itself is the act of consumption, making him the ultimate apex predator:
Listen, Kokutou. If that's what his Origin is, then his past life was probably a creature that feasted on everything it could get its hands on. Those who have awakened their Origins will gain the past lives they have accumulated. He can't be considered a single human anymoreーhe's an entire pack of beasts. Things haven't taken a turn for the worse because his original personality is still holding on, but once that's gone, that pack of beasts is all that will remain. Well, that'd also be quite the interesting sight," she said with a sarcastic grin on her face. - Kara no Kyoukai Chapter 7
This passage highlights that Lio isn’t just a single entity: He embodies the accumulated predatory instincts of countless past lives, effectively becoming a manifestation of consumption itself. In contrast, Nrvnqsr’s creatures are individual manifestations created through his vampiric nature, meaning they are still bound by the limitations of physical existence. Lio, however, transcends this entirely, as his power isn’t restricted to individual forms but to the very essence of predation. Lio isn't just another supernatural predator, he's the pinnacle of what it means to be one, fundamentally above any lifeform that still relies on consumption as a means of survival.
This is why Lio is described as being beyond "any creature of flesh and bone." Creatures of flesh and bone are just particular shapes taken by the broader concept of predation, survival, or consumption, the very thing his Origin embodies. Because he has awakened to the purest form of that impulse, he naturally has access to every aspect of those creatures' abilities, but without any of their inherent limitations. He doesn’t just resemble a beast; he is the perfected and ultimate expression of what it means to consume, meaning he can always exceed any natural predator or combatant who is merely following biological limits. In other words, a half-dead Shiki further numbed by a muscle relaxant effortlessly blitzed and killed someone whose sheer physical prowess surpassed even Arcueid and the Dead Apostle Ancestors.
Oh, and since I have already seen someone coping about this, yes, I'm well aware that the original text and the Bakatsuki translation says "Surpassed the line of an actual beast" instead of "any creature of flesh and bone". But that still means exactly what I said: It emphasizes that Lio has gone beyond the level of any natural predator, making direct comparison to an animal meaningless. But since animals are the baseline for all predators in nature, including vampires, Dead Apostles, and even True Ancestors, it still follows that Lio has surpassed them as well.
People who argue against this are missing the implication of that line. If he's no longer within the realm of what can be called an "animal" (even conceptually), then he's beyond all beings that operate on instinct and physicality, which includes the vampires and True Ancestors tied to Gaia's ecosystem.
Just as Ryougi evaded Asagami’s Distortion despite it twisting the very space she physically moved through, her showing against Lio further proves that an awakened Origin actively overrides physical limitations to ensure that their domain is always enforced. In Shiki’s case, her Origin of Nothingness guarantees that her combat instincts and killing techniques remain effective, even against forces that should make movement impossible.
As the last notable speed feat, Shiki moves so fast she leaves only an afterimage of herself against Araya Souren:
If Shiki left an afterimage of a white kimono in the darkness of the night as she ran, the man melted into the night as he approached his prey.
A demon-like speed that didn't even let you grasp the process of him approaching. - Kara no Kyoukai Chapter 5
As a final bonus, Azaka also describes her as having exceptional physical abilities. She further adds that, no matter how hard she trains as a Magus, she cannot match up to her:
Shiki has the power to see things that normal people can't. Aside from being able to see spirits, she can apparently see the lines that hold an object together.
On top of that, she's a savage at heart with incredible reflexes and physical abilities. If I were to be honest, she's the exact opposite of Mikiyaーshe's someone special. Someone like that is the last person I'd ever want to see with him.
In the first place, I actually only began training with Ms. Touko because of her. If Mikiya's partner was an average girl, I would've been able to eliminate her in a single day. However, I was soon faced with the reality that Shiki was on a completely different level altogether.
Despite all of that, I had to cope with the bitter truth that I still wouldn't be able to match up to Shiki, and so there I was honing my skills day by day. - Kara no Kyoukai Chapter 6
By now, it should be clear that Shiki is an absolute powerhouse. She moves and reacts near-instantaneously, surpassing even transcendental, Origin-awakened monsters that exist beyond True Ancestors. Even while exhausted, she effortlessly outclasses humans physically and can break the bones of superhumans with ease. She can leap between buildings, run at elite athlete speeds despite a raging hurricane, and regenerate at incredible speed. Her remarkable pain tolerance allows her to endure unimaginable agony as if it were nothing.
Ryougi Shiki isn’t just a formidable fighter, she is a being designed for flawless execution. Every action is performed with inhuman precision and competence, to the point that she can instantly replicate and improve any technique she encounters. Her Origin Awakening surpasses even those of heavy hitters like Kishima Kouma and Nanaya Shiki, positioning her as a force beyond nearly any other in the verse.
Debunking misinformation:
Some idiots uses two out of context quotes to downplay Ryougi to normal human level.
One of those is this dialogue from Touko:
“Sure, you didn’t make a mistake. For you as a Magus, this is the best solution. But, what if the assumption itself is a mistake? You isolated Shiki? Not in a room somewhere in this apartment complex, but you isolated her in this apartment complex itself? A Bounded Field that achieves spacial isolation is already on the level of Magic. It’s a miracle that only a Bounded Field expert like you could create.
“Those who are trapped by the sealed space of a Mobius Ring can never get out from the inside. A closed world that’s enclosed by walls can’t be destroyed by physical impacts, it’s a cage that’s impossible to escape from. You slapped Shiki in there, which gave you peace of mind.
“That’s certainly perfect. But something like that won’t work against her. Just as Magecraft is omnipotent in civilized society, she is in opposition to people like us who live by concepts. We’re a threat against common sense, but Shiki is Death for the absurd. You should’ve already experienced that.”
Surely Ryougi Shiki, who saw death, was an unusual existence. However, there were many people in the world who had the ability to kill people. If it were just about killing living creatures, there was no way to beat the various modern weapons that civilization has produced.
That’s right. What makes Ryougi Shiki’s nature so different from Magi like them, was definitely not something like that. Her real nature is the ultimate nothingness that kills things that can’t be killed, even formless concepts.
“The thing that causes death.” That is the ability of Ryougi Shiki.
No weapon could interfere with a sealed world where the space was chained together infinitely with no exit. Because it had no shape, physical weapons that can only interact with physical objects couldn’t clash with it. But, Ryougi Shiki’s power was precisely one that targeted such formless things.
Then..?
“Yes, if you wanted to imprison Shiki, you should’ve trapped her in a box made of concrete.
If Shiki only had the physical strength of a young lady, all you had to do was simply prepare a hidden room enclosed by iron walls. But Araya Souren. You are a Magus, therefore you treat Magecraft as an absolute. Closing off space is meaningless. You used something ambiguous like that, but she can easily cut through that thing.” - Kara no Kyoukai Chapter 5
"Touko said Shiki has the strength of a normal girl!"
Not really. Touko’s remark about Shiki's strength is not to be taken literally. The idea that Shiki’s Mystic Eyes of Death Perception would be ineffective against concrete or iron is absurd. If Araya had trapped Shiki in a room made of iron, she could have easily sliced through it with her abilities.
The real purpose of Touko’s statement is to mock Araya’s flawed understanding of Shiki’s nature. Araya believed that by isolating Shiki within a bounded space, he could contain her. However, Touko dismantles this reasoning by pointing out that Magecraft, which operates within the confines of physical and magical logic, is meaningless against Shiki. She is not confined by these limitations.
In the following exchange, Touko highlights that while Araya’s Bounded Field might be perfect in the physical world, it doesn’t hold up against Shiki, who operates on a higher conceptual level. She is the embodiment of Death itself, capable of severing not only living things but even the very concepts that define existence, including space itself. A bounded space or a concrete wall is just another part of reality for Shiki, something she can perceive and sever. This makes the Bounded Field meaningless against her.
Touko’s use of “strength” is a sarcastic comment about how Araya’s perception of Shiki as a mere young woman led him to assume she could be contained physically. Her power is not just physical, it is the power of erasure, transcending physical constraints entirely.
Araya himself realizes his mistake when he sees that Shiki has escaped his infinite space. He cast her into a boundless void with no end, yet she was able to perceive its underlying nature: The very concept that defines it as 'space' and the abstract principles sustaining it. To Shiki, an infinite space without defined limits holds no meaning. The moment she recognized its existence as something that could be conceptualized and put into words (Unlike " " which is truly boundless and thus cannot be killed), she was able to sever that concept itself, rendering the space powerless and escaping. Araya's attempt to create an inescapable prison was useless against her, as she transcends the very concepts of space and time that his magic relies on:
He had sufficient awareness to understand how she escaped the imprisoned space. Last night, the young lady had lost consciousness after several of her ribs were shattered by the Magus’s blow.
She had just recently awakened within the closed space, in the boundary set between the walls of the apartment complex. Within that impossible space she slashed through the impossible wall.
Infinity is not 「 」. For infinity to remain infinite, the finite has to be defined. Without the finite there cannot exist infinity. Because things have an end, we can observe the thing called infinity.
Ryougi Shiki had been cast into infinity, she saw the impossible finite and cut through it.
Of course, there is no finite inside of the infinite. You can’t slash through what doesn’t exist, so escape from such a cage is impossible. But, if there is no finite then there is no infinite. Whether finite walls exist or not, an endless world holds no meaning before Ryougi Shiki.
If there really is no finite, then it’s not infinite but 「 」. If the finite can be comprehended, Shiki could detect and slash through it.
... The black hole that should have been absolute was just a small dark room to his opponent. The Magus felt ashamed of himself. - Kara no Kyoukai Chapter 5 Kara no Kyoukai Chapter 5
This scene serves to deconstruct Araya’s misconception about Shiki. His attempt to confine her with his Magecraft failed because he didn’t understand that Shiki's abilities are beyond the logical constraints of magic and physicality. Touko’s remark was a rhetorical jab, highlighting Araya’s failure to grasp Shiki’s true nature. Misinterpreting it as a literal assessment of Shiki's strength misses the point entirely.
In essence, Touko is pointing out that IF Shiki were just a normal girl with no extraordinary abilities, then a concrete cell would indeed have been enough to contain her. However, Araya, as a Magus, relied on Magecraft, treating it as absolute. He assumed that his magical barriers would work against Shiki, but he failed to realise that Shiki's power transcends even the concepts of physical space and magic. Her abilities go beyond these logical constraints, meaning no physical or magical containment could hold her. Touko is mocking this misconception by showing that Shiki isn’t bound by the same rules as humans or even Magi, she is Death itself, capable of severing concepts that define existence.
----
The other (And most common) out-of-context quote used to downplay Ryougi is this one:
His tightly clenched fist drives into Shiki's stomach. Receiving a blow that could break through a large tree, Shiki's body rises up into the air. With just that one attack Shiki spews out just as much blood as the mage who has had his chest and neck stabbed. With a grating noise, her insides and the bones that were protecting them break.
"---."
Shiki faints. No matter how great a physique she had, her body is still that of a young girl. Even if half the power had been held back, there was no way she could withstand Araya's attack which could break concrete walls. Grabbing hold of her belly with one hand the mage lifts the girl up, and throws her at the mansion wall. It was a brutal action that looked like it should break every bone in Shiki's body, but that too turned into an unnatural event. ... Having been thrown onto the wall Shiki's body was sucked in as if she was sinking into water. Only when the mansion wall had finishing gulping Shiki down, did the mage lower his arm. - Kara no Kyoukai Chapter 5
Unlike the other one, this is a bit more understandable. Even I misinterpreted it initially. But the context is actually very simple:
The passage doesn’t undermine Shiki’s superhuman durability but rather highlights the distinction between being superhuman and being invincible. While her body is incredibly resilient, it is not indestructible. She can push past human limitations through sheer willpower, but there is a threshold where overwhelming force can incapacitate her.
Araya’s punch, as described, emphasizes its sheer destructive magnitude. The comparison to breaking through concrete and trees isn’t meant to equate Shiki’s durability to those materials but to illustrate the force behind the attack. The key point is the overwhelming scale of the impact, not simply raw attack power. It’s akin to saying, “Even if Shiki’s body were as tough as a tank, Araya’s punch is like a wrecking ball capable of smashing through it.”
Ultimately, this passage isn’t about assigning specific durability levels but about illustrating the vast disparity in physical strength between Araya and Shiki.
----
Now, there is actually one last thing left to clear up, which is people bringing up how Shiki in her younger days was inferior to her father apparently:
After finishing the match against my father, who surpassed me in both skill and strength, I head to my room. - Kara no Kyoukai Chapter 2
This is perhaps the most understandable argument in this section, but it overlooks a key aspect of Shiki’s development: at the time, she was unaware of her Origin, which is crucial to unlocking her true power. In Kara no Kyoukai Chapter 7, we learn that most people are unaware of their Origins, and this lack of awareness prevents them from fully realising their abilities:
Unless you become aware of it for whatever reason, that is." - Kara no Kyoukai Chapter 7
"Are you sure about that? Awakening someone else's Origin is not something a mage can do on their own. An Origin can only be brought to the forefront once the person in question becomes aware of it. In other words, it's a hidden spell that can only be carried out with the consent of both parties.
Shirazumi Lio chose this path at his own volition. He himself chose to become a beast, and he himself decided to kill all of those people. The lives he has taken will never come back. It's too late for him, even if you somehow managed to bring him back to normal. He told you that he couldn't hold himself back, but that isn't true. - Kara no Kyoukai Chapter 7
The key point here is that an Origin doesn’t control a person unless they’re aware of it. Awareness is essential to harnessing its power.
This principle is further illustrated through Lio’s experience. Lio acknowledges his abnormality and becomes aware of his Origin, which drives him to commit acts that aren't possible for normal humans. However, as Araya points out, simply recognizing an Origin isn’t enough. It must be awakened to fully manifest:
The boy, over the course of an hour, devoured a human corpse. Using nothing but his bare teeth and jaw, he consumed a creature larger than himself. The taste of human flesh held no pleasure or disgust; it was simply a task requiring raw exertion.
"An hour? Impressive," the cloaked figure remarked, having witnessed the boy's meal.
The boy turned, his mouth a crimson mask, not from the human flesh, but from the shattered bones of his own jaw, testament to his relentless chewing.
Yet, he hadn't stopped for a single second. As a result, the corpse had vanished without a trace.
"But that is your limit," the man continued.
“Merely acknowledging your Origin won't suffice. It must be awakened to take form."
The boy listened with vacant eyes.
For Lio, this awakening transforms him, though it also drives him to madness. Araya makes it clear that without this awakening, Lio would remain a mere deranged cannibal, unable to tap into his true potential:
"If you remain as you are, you will simply be labelled a deranged cannibal, and your life will end tragically. But surely that's not what you desire.
The power of a transcendent being, free from all constraints, the specialness of an aberrant life–don't you crave it?" - Kara no Kyoukai Chapter 7
This shows that both awakening and self-awareness are fundamental to unlocking one’s true abilities. Touko's comment about Araya’s technique, requiring the target’s consent to awaken their Origin, further reinforces this point.
And at the time of Chapter 2, Shiki was unaware of her abnormality. It wasn’t until Mikiya "broke" her mental barrier and helped her confront her own contradictions that she became aware of her Origin:
The following quote illustrates how Shiki’s awareness of her Origin marks the true turning point in her development, as it forces her to confront the painful truth about her identity:
“After meeting Mikiya, I became warped. I realised that while I had blended into society, there had never been a moment where I truly lived within its norms. ...If only I hadn't known. I wished I hadn't known the warmth I could never possess. I yearned for it, but that yearning was also my undoing. No matter how much I tried to rationalise it, I was Shiki, the one who harboured a bloodthirsty monster within. That's when the undeniable truth slammed into me: I was broken. I desperately wanted to deny that epiphany and return to my former self, the one who felt no suffering. But I failed. From that point on, the bond between me and SHIKI began to fray.” - Kara no Kyoukai Chapter 7
This passage highlights how, after meeting Mikiya, Shiki becomes fully aware of her humanity and the internal contradictions that exist within her, triggered by the realisation of her Origin and the emotional warmth she can never fully grasp. Her "breaking" in this sense refers to the moment she becomes aware of her true nature, and the consequences of that awareness are her internal struggles with SHIKI and the ensuing loss of the simplicity she once knew. This is the true moment where Shiki begins to awaken, and from that point, her full potential can begin to emerge. It’s this awakening, this self-awareness, that transforms her from the girl who was unaware of her own abnormality into the person who must now face the power and complexity of her Origin.
Ryougi Shiki was originally born as an empty vessel, a doll devoid of intellectual substance, akin to a blank slate or an entity defined by nothingness, “ ”. It was only when the Ryougi family awakened her Origin that she became self-aware of the external world. This world, however, was meaningless and bothersome to her, especially in comparison to her non-dual perspective, which was intricately connected to “ ”, a state that inherently contained all things. She wished to erase this external world, but the emergence of two distinct personalities, Shiki, the female self, and SHIKI, the male counterpart, precluded her from acting on this desire. These two personalities were shaped by her brain and its experiences, representing the natural aspects of her being. They overrode Void, who was simply the body and soul itself. As the body, Void was bound to follow the will of the mind, which instinctively sought to engage with the world upon its creation. Unable to erase the world, Void fell into an eternal slumber, while Shiki and SHIKI continued to share control over her body, unaware of the true nature of their existence.
This lack of awareness meant that Ryougi’s Origin was never truly awakened. It took a significant catalyst, Mikiya, for Shiki to confront her nature and the contradictions within her. Her coma further forced her to face her Origin directly, encountering Death itself in a suspended state of Stillness, the boundary between existence and non-existence. In this state, all concepts are seen in their purest form, where creation and destruction converge in a singular, formless ground zero. Here, Shiki gained perfect clarity, not only of the abstract world but of her own Origin, which allowed her to perceive and later act upon these formless concepts:
This place was dark, and the floor was pitch black. When I realized that the only thing around me was the darkness, I had accepted the fact that I was dead. I was floating in a sea with no light or sound. Naked, without anything to cover her, the human being called Ryougi Shiki was sinking into the depths.
There was no light here. No, I suspect I had never fallen in the first place. Since there was nothing here.
It wasn’t just that there was no light, there wasn’t even any darkness. Since there was nothing here, nothing was visible. There was no meaning to the concept of falling. Inside the 「 」 within which even form was meaningless, just my body kept sinking. The naked me; I’m a poisonous shade which made me want to turn my eyes away. Because everything 「here」 bore such a poisonous aura
“–––This is death.”
Even the sound of my muttering seemed like a dream.
Then, I observed something like “time”. Time had no meaning inside「 」, but I became able to observe it. As naturally as flowing water, as grossly as putrefaction, I was just marking time.
There was nothing here.
Even if I kept continuously looking in the distance, I couldn’t see anything. Even if I kept waiting continuously for something, I couldn’t see anything.
It was very nice and peaceful.
No, since nothing had meaning, just 「being」here made everything perfect.
This was death.
The world which only the dead could reach. The world which the living could not see.
But, I was still alive–
I thought I would lose my mind.
For two years I sat there in the midst of the concept called “death”. Rather then observation, it was closer to the struggle of battle. - Kara no Kyoukai Chapter 4
I, who experienced 「death」for two years while still alive. My body has changed so that I can now view such formless concepts.- Kara no Kyoukai Chapter 4
Upon awakening from her coma, Shiki returned with a direct experience of the abstract nature of her Origin, and the realisation of her own abnormality, brought on by the incident with Mikiya. This marked the true unlocking of her Awakened Origin. In fact, as soon as Shiki emerged from her apathy and began responding to her instincts of survival against the wraith in Chapter 4, she instinctively performed "miraculous" feats she had never previously attempted. This alignment with her Origin, even at a basic level, marked the beginning of her true power awakening:
After the arrangement changed so that the corpse was on the ground side and I was on top riding it, I jumped by sense alone. I had just executed a miraculous fall, the likes of which I hadn't done once in the dojo - Kara no Kyoukai Chapter 4
Shiki then realizes that, in these moments, she finally feels truly alive, fully embracing her Origin as she overcomes the wraith. This marks the beginning of her deeper connection to her powers. Gradually, she adjusts to her MEoDP and her instincts, testing the boundaries of her existence during her fight with Asagami Fujino. It is through these trials that she ultimately unlocks her full potential, though she can only access this power when she is fully intent on killing. Therefore, her sparring with her father holds little relevance in gauging her true level of power in the main story.
Before the coma, Shiki's combat abilities were structured and imposed upon her as part of the Ryougi family's system of multiple personalities. Like a computer running different programs, her fighting skills were pre-installed within one of these personalities, allowing her to execute techniques with proficiency but without true self-awareness. This meant she fought using a learned, rigid style rather than instinct, limiting her ability to adapt beyond what had been trained into her. While still highly skilled, she was ultimately following a "script" rather than tapping into a deeper, innate understanding of combat. Additionally, because she actively suppressed her Yang side (SHIKI) and only let him out when needed, primarily in fights, she never had the freedom to develop her own abilities naturally. The act of fighting was something external to her core identity, handled by a distinct persona rather than integrated into her true self.
After the coma, Shiki no longer relied on structured techniques. Instead, she fought through pure mimicry and instinct, executing movements naturally without conscious effort. Her combat style became fluid and adaptive, as if directly manifesting the most optimal attacks and defenses in the moment. This shift came from her Origin, which allowed her to bypass traditional learning and instead become the embodiment of combat itself. Without the separation between herself and the act of fighting, her abilities were no longer restricted by external programming or divided personalities. Instead, they became an extension of her very being, allowing her to surpass not only her former self but also conventional limitations on combat skill.
------
"Ryougi was threatened by the collapse of a building"
This is a rare argument used by dishonest liars, as this is exclusive to the anime adaptation. In the original novel, what actually happened was that Araya used his own power to crush the building. It was his spatial compression, but on a far larger scale, affecting his entire domain:
The Magus suddenly appeared in the garden, without a moment’s rest from the spatial transition he stuck out his right arm.
Looking up into the night sky, he spread the palm of his hand to crush the circular tower. - Kara no Kyoukai Chapter 5
MEoDP Misconception:

Another misconception I wanted to talk about here is the scope of Shiki’s MEoDP and their actual significance.
Many misunderstand the true nature of the Mystic Eyes of Death Perception. Far from being just an overpowered ability, MEoDP is the ultimate manifestation of a fundamental truth: everything that flows from The One, The Root, is contingent upon it. Everything exists because of The One, and therefore, everything can end, returning to it. Death, in this sense, is not merely an event but the inevitable reversion of all things to their origin.
The One itself is the omnipotent abstract source, the foundation of all existence. It holds all causality, all potentiality, and from it, reality is actualized. Everything that exists is a temporary expression of this potential, given form only to eventually return to nothingness. MEoDP does not grant power over life and death arbitrarily; rather, it is the absolute perception of this cycle, the ability to see the inherent impermanence in all things:

"... Indeed, I was foolish. I should have had all the proof I needed after the events at the hospital. Whether it is dead or alive, if it moves you cut off the root of that motion. That is your ability. Even if I am a stopped organism, as long I exist like this there is a thread that permits my existence. If that is cut I would definitely die. The unique exception is this left arm, but even that can't be hidden forever. No matter which saint's bone it is as long as it functions there will always be a cause for that movement." - Kara no Kyoukai Chapter 5
—The swirl of the Root is a "place" where all causalities interlace, where all things are in potential, and therefore where nothing is whatsoever. - Kara no Kyoukai Epilogue
In this context, the only truly unending, non-contingent existence is The One itself. It does not flow outward, it simply is. Everything else, no matter how grand or seemingly eternal, ultimately exists at the mercy of this fundamental truth. To wield MEoDP is to grasp the undeniable reality that existence itself is transient, and death is not destruction, but a return to the source. As Arcueid and Araya Souren stated in the scans above, no matter how complex or diversified something is, it will always have a thread connecting it to the source of its existence: The Root.
Void Shiki describes MEoDP as the ability to perceive the very blueprint of reality, exposing its fundamental structure:
“That is Shiki's capability. Much like Asagami Fujino, she perceives a unique channel in which things unseen by others become visible. When she ‘looks’ at them, she is seeing a glimpse of the architect’s floor plan for all reality. That is the ‘swirl of the Root.’”
— Kara no Kyoukai Epilogue
Because MEoDP reveals the blueprint of existence itself, it does not merely destroy things in a conventional sense, it erases their very idea, bypassing all defenses, resistances, and even abstract protections. No amount of power or complexity can prevent something from ceasing to exist when its fundamental principle is severed.
The only limitations placed on MEoDP are due to the user's brain struggling to process the death of increasingly complex or abstract entities. This is why Ryougi Shiki initially struggles with certain targets throughout the story, despite MEoDP itself being absolute. As she adapts to perceiving death at higher levels, her eyes evolve, allowing her to kill progressively more abstract things with greater ease.
Even in the early stages of the story, Ryougi Shiki’s MEoDP are already immensely powerful, capable of erasing even conceptual constructs, entities that normally exist beyond the reach of physical force. Examples include Asagami Fujino’s spatial distortions:
"... I see.
"That's why... if one exists, I could even kill a God." - Kara no Kyoukai Chapter 3
The only reason she struggled with them initially is because she wasn't used to her eyes yet, as she had only recently learned to use them, making formless things difficult to see until she adapted more:
I suddenly recall the girl that was with Azaka....... That aura of death creeping out of her like capillaries. Since I am not used to my eyes yet, I saw it without any prior preparation.... That was abnormal. - Kara no Kyoukai Chapter 3
In fact, later in Chapter 5 she casually "kills" Araya Souren’s bounded fields, which are not physical barriers but manifestations of fundamental laws imposed upon reality itself:
And with that she planted her knife in the floor. Out of the three circles the mage possessed, she had just 'killed' the outermost circle.
"--- Ignorance."
In an anxious manner the mage came forward. Another step, even though he approaches Shiki there is no change in Shiki.... The man's talismans have just shrunk from three to two. The mage clicks his tongue in exasperation. He hadn't considered the possibility that Shiki's Mystic Eyes of Death Perception would be so powerful. To think that she could kill a concept like a ward which had no form, or life, that kind of absolute power ---. - Kara no Kyoukai: Chapter 05
By the ending section of Chapter 5, Shiki's MEoDP evolved to a level where she could perceive and erase even higher-order conceptual structures. As Touko later clarifies, the true nature of MEoDP is not about killing living creatures but about ultimate nothingness, the ability to erase things that should be untouchable by any conventional means:
- Kara no Kyoukai Chapter 5
This is where most people misunderstand the full extent of MEoDP. Once Shiki’s eyes evolved to perceive and erase purely abstract concepts, she was no longer restricted by the need to physically close the distance and land a slash to "kill" her target. This becomes evident when she ultimately "kills" Araya’s infinite universe:
This universe Araya created was not only infinite in its expanse but also a spatially closed reality, separate from Gaia’s. This means that, no matter how much distance is traveled, there would be no way to reach another reality or escape in any conventional way, unless one possessed the ability to open portals between dimensions. The "closed loop" nature of the universe refers to how its function isolates its contents from the outside reality, causing everything inside the space to loop back to its starting point while actively resisting any escape methods. It’s like a prison where the walls are invisible but still exist, manifesting as an unbreakable conceptual barrier.
However, Shiki was able to destroy it, precisely because her MEoDP can target such formless concepts. Although the infinite space created by Araya lacked a finite point, Shiki was able to conceptualize the finite nature of the space itself ("This is a sealed space with the specific function of isolating its contents"). Since the dimension could be easily defined through language, it was far from the true boundlessness of " ", the omnipotent source of existence, a state so complete that any attempt at description only diminishes its actual nature:
If you really wished to pronounce this term, call it “Kara.”Its meaning varied depending on each individual’s understanding. To put it in simple terms, it was the Spiral of Origin. However, since the Spiral of Origin was called the Spiral of Origin, it was no longer “ ”.To properly express this term was a source of headache during the production of the drama CDs. -Garden of sinners Pamphlet: Kara no Kyoukai Settings Glossary
Shiki's power is precisely the ability to dissolve the boundary/meaning of objects, returning them to " ". This means that she kills the very definition/starting idea of the object, making it meaningless and no different from the boundless nature of the Root. This is why her power is so incredible: She doesn't kill physically, but she erases the very idea behind something, which completely collapses its physical form and influence on reality as a direct side effect:
The constantly shifting, graffiti-like lines visible to Ryougi Shiki. The lines appeared on everything, and by slashing the lines with a knife, the object bearing the lines could be "killed". Since the lines posed no resistance, everything could be killed with the same ease. The Lines of Death are not the lines at which "an object can be easily cut apart", rather, they are the concept of longevity given form. Strictly speaking, it is not "tracing the lines causing the object to fall apart", but "ending the lifespan and killing the object". To put it into simpler terms, it is the erasure of existence rather than physical destruction.- Kara no Kyoukai Special Pamphlet - Encyclopedia: Line of Death [Others], p.032
"... Indeed, I was foolish. I should have had all the proof I needed after the events at the hospital. Whether it is dead or alive, if it moves you cut off the root of that motion. That is your ability. - Kara no Kyoukai Chapter 5
I, who experienced 「death」for two years while still alive. My body has changed so that I can now view such formless concepts.- Kara no Kyoukai Chapter 4
This illustrates how Shiki can kill abstract concepts, which do not occupy any specific location and have no observable lines or points. Shiki had to conceptualize the death of the space herself, using only her mind. This ability allows her to kill from a distance, without needing to be physically close to the target. However, she didn't use this ability against Araya because his Origin of Stillness renders him "already dead", an unchanging essence incapable of interaction. This Origin preserves his consciousness beyond physical death, placing Araya in a transcendental state where the most one can do is destroy his physical form, banish his essence within Stillness, and prevent him from interacting with reality again:
The mage's discourse continues."As a reference, I do not die. My origin is 'suspension'. Someone who has woken to their origin becomes ruled by that origin itself. Someone who has already stopped - how can you kill him?" Shiki doesn't reply.
Those who awaken to their origin are bound by their origin. I see. My impulse was Stillness" The magus said this, not to anyone, but in irony. - Kara no Kyoukai Chapter 5
Araya's statement means that even though he is in a state of stasis, his existence is still tethered to reality through a faint thread that connects him to it. This thread is something Shiki could potentially target, severing his connection to the world and rendering him unable to interact with reality. Despite this, in their final confrontation, Shiki was able to destroy Araya's Bounded Fields, magical constructs designed to protect him, even though they were physically outside her range:
Ryougi Shiki had literally shot forth like a bullet.
She drew near to the Magus to land a blow, staying in the stance she had while cutting through the distortion.
Ryougi Shiki’s katana cleaved in a straight horizontal line before taking a step forward.
The Bounded Field the Magus had relied on dispersed.
... If it were only the outer perimeter, Araya was ready to let it be killed in one blow. Even if she got close, he intended to use the moment when, Shiki was focused on killing the second layer, to decide the match.
However with just one swing, she simultaneously annihilated two Bounded Fields outside of her range. - Kara no Kyoukai Chapter 5
This confirms that Shiki had mastered the ability to erase things non-locally by this point. The destruction of two Bounded Fields outside her physical range demonstrates her capacity to sever concepts and constructs beyond the constraints of direct interaction. However, again, Araya's Origin of Stillness, which makes him effectively eternal, forces Shiki to target his physical body. The only aspect of his being susceptible to her Entropy is his physical form.
If Shiki were to attempt to manifest Araya’s death, as she did with his infinite dimension, she would have to conceptualize his death as part of his identity. But because Araya’s concept is tied to the unchanging, eternal nature of Stillness, she cannot think of him in terms of death. His essence is immune to her powers, as it cannot be affected by concepts of entropy or destruction in the same way other beings can.
Thus, while Shiki may perceive the death of Araya’s physical body, she cannot directly conceptualize or think about the destruction of his essence. This is why, despite her ability to erase things beyond her physical reach, she must physically approach him and sever his body instead.
Another common MEoDP misconception is that Shiki cannot kill words, based on her initial confrontation with God's Word in Kara no Kyoukai Chapter 6. In the scene, God's Word asserts:
"This is futile. I already explained, you cannot defeat me. Even you, who can kill anything, cannot vanquish words."
It was a truth I'd never contemplated. Words were the one enemy beyond my reach.
"However, that doesn't grant me the power to kill you either. This is the extent of my abilities. Any closer, and you could overpower me with ease. There will be no exchange of lives. I am no warrior. My role is simply to fulfil your desires." - Kara no Kyoukai Chapter 6
At this point, Shiki acknowledges that words are beyond her reach, admitting that she had never considered the idea that words themselves could be impervious to death. This admission, however, does not imply a definitive limitation on her abilities.
The key here is that Shiki’s statement, “I never contemplated this idea,” suggests she had simply not considered words as something that could be killed, rather than acknowledging an absolute barrier to her power. This doesn't make it an inherent limit of her Death Perception.
By the end of the chapter, Shiki's understanding evolves. She reflects on the transient nature of all things, including words:
The mage claimed that even I couldn't kill words. Yet, even words will someday perish. All things fade, vanish, and succumb to death. Without this mortality, the boundary between past and future would blur. It is because things don't return that we cherish them, fiercely guarding against their loss. Why, then, do we deem something non-eternal because it disappears? Even forgotten, the fact that it existed will not change. Only the receiving vessel, our hearts, undergoes change.
I should have spoken. Seeking eternity in oblivion is a futile pursuit.
Things meant to be forgotten are naturally consigned to peaceful slumber, free from further distortion. This act of forgetting, itself, becomes a form of eternity.
Now I understand. SHIKI, the boy within me, had retreated into oblivion.
He carefully laid those truly precious memories to rest, ensuring they wouldn't be warped by my present self.
Even if I cannot remember them, their existence remains irrefutable.
The mage must have known this, but he could not accept it as an answer.
Perhaps lacking a self, he craved eternity in words, the seemingly undying entity, precisely because he possessed nothing truly his own. - Kara no Kyoukai Chapter 6
In this passage, Shiki realises that words, like everything else, are subject to time and perception. They can be forgotten, misinterpreted, and eventually become meaningless. The idea that words are "eternal" because they persist in a physical sense is debunked, as their meaning is subject to change or even complete dissolution over time. Shiki comes to understand that words themselves are not invulnerable to the power of death, as they too are bound by the limits of time and human perception. The shift in her understanding demonstrates her growing ability to interact with and potentially "kill" words, not merely in the sense of erasing them physically, but by severing their meaning and relevance.
This evolution in her perception strengthens her ability to erase abstract concepts. In the epilogue, Void Shiki affirms this by declaring that Shiki's powers can kill all things, without exception:
If nihil is her origin, then most likely she wills to bring all things to nought. Shiki is able to kill anything without exception, for that reason alone. The personality, Shiki, strives to negate. Why? Because that is the original pattern of her soul. The inclination to nihil, which ardently wishes the death of all creation. - Kara no Kyoukai Epilogue
This includes the concept of words, which are ultimately bound by the same impermanence that all things face in the universe. In this way, Shiki's Death Perception expands to include the concept of words as well, allowing her to erase them in the same way she can destroy all other things in existence.
We see further evidence that Shiki has mastered all forms of Death by the time of Melty Blood Actress Again, where Shiki confronts Archetype-Earth, urged by her other self (Void) to take her out:

And the guidebook confirms Ryougi did indeed kill Archetype in that timeline:

This is impressive, as Archetype is an Ultimate One, beings that normally lack a concept of Death:
By the way, the Mystic Eyes of Death Perception can’t kill it. It does not possess the concept of death, so you'll have to destroy it physically. - Character Material - ORT, p.070-071
However, this is really just the same situation as with Araya Souren. Notice that the statement still implies you can destroy them physically, meaning their physical form can be obliterated, even though their essence and consciousness are immortal. This is no different from Araya, against whom Ryougi couldn't initially perceive the Lines of Death, until she exerted herself to identify weak points in his physical form. In fact, we know that Types have been destroyed before by the Black Barrel:
It is a conceptual armament of “natural lifespan,” which demonstrates a toxin (attack power) in proportion to the predestined span of the target’s life. - Melty Blood Act Cadenza PS2 Manual - Barrel Replica [Weapon]
A black gun. It is a weapon that can destroy the Fifth Theoretical Element, and is constructed from the Fifth True Element. It is called a conceptual weapon of natural life by the Six Sisters. The bullets can ignore the abilities of anything that uses Grain and cause direct damage. It is similar to a cancer cell directly invading a body. One of the reasons that humans have degraded as is that they have no way to utilize the Grain in the air. As soon as they breathe it in, they die.The moment that this new energy source, Grain, rejected them, humans became the weakest of all life forms, but Black Barrel could be called the one weapon that reverses that specific weak point. - Character Material - Godo, p.029
The Black Barrel is a conceptual weapon that imposes a lifespan on Ultimate Ones by targeting the "grain" that makes up their bodies. While Types are immortal in essence, the physical material constituting their forms is still subject to decay and entropy, as is the case with all things. This allows conceptual weapons like the Black Barrel to destroy them by severing their connection to a physical vessel, effectively rendering them unable to interact with reality. The predetermined lifespan of a substance is something that the Mystic Eyes of Death Perception also perceives:
The Lines of Death are not the lines at which "an object can be easily cut apart", rather, they are the concept of longevity given form. Strictly speaking, it is not "tracing the lines causing the object to fall apart", but "ending the lifespan and killing the object".To put it into simpler terms, it is the erasure of existence rather than physical destruction.
Ryougi Shiki is a living being, and she seemed to have a easier time seeing the end of a living being. This is because as a living being, it is easier to comprehend "the death of a living being". In order to see the Lines of Death of minerals or Concepts, she either has to become minerals, or use her brain and tap into her "imagination".
In summary, the end (lines) of an existence that humans cannot comprehend is not visible. - Kara no Kyoukai Special Pamphlet - Encyclopedia: Line of Death [Others], p.032
Note that the passage above from the Special Pamphlet does not suggest that Ryougi Shiki is incapable of killing entities beyond human comprehension. Instead, it explains that the Lines of Death for things like minerals or abstract concepts are typically not visible to her, unlike the death of living beings, which she can instinctively perceive.
The core concept here is that the Lines of Death represent an object’s lifespan or existence. For living beings, Shiki can more easily perceive their Lines of Death because "death" is something she inherently understands. However, for entities that lie outside of human experience, such as minerals or abstract concepts, these lines are not immediately perceptible. In these cases, Shiki must either tap into her imagination, as the pamphlet suggests, or "become" those entities in a way to perceive their Lines of Death and kill them. Thus, Shiki's ability to kill such beings is not restricted, she simply needs to access a deeper, more abstract understanding of their existence.
Thus, Ryougi’s inability to perceive the Lines of Death on Archetype initially doesn’t mean she cannot kill her. This limitation only applies to the basic function of the Mystic Eyes of Death Perception, not to the more abstract modes of perception Shiki can access to kill more complex or abstract entities, such as words. In the MB cutscene, Ryougi is still confident in her ability to kill Archetype, with Archetype herself acknowledging that she has come to bestow death on something that cannot die, which parallels the function of the Black Barrel.
Ryougi can eliminate Types either by destroying their physical vessels (Like she did with Araya Souren, who also lacked a concept of death) or by conceptualizing their end and erasing them non-locally (Like she did with Araya's infinite universe). However, the latter is generally impractical, as Types are tied to planets and universal concepts, and erasing them entirely from existence would carry great risk.
So, Base Ryougi without Self-Hypnosis (evidenced by her lack of a sword) was anticipated to battle Archetype-Earth. The fight was hyped to the extent that it was left on a cliffhanger, indicating the intensity of the encounter. Later, a guidebook confirmed that Ryougi did indeed defeat Archetype, with the guidebook noting that Ryougi's fate was to become a "god killer."
While Archetype is not a literal god, the term "god killer" refers to Ryougi's assertion that she can kill anything, even gods. This statement is more about beings of god-like stature or power.
The key point here is that Ryougi was able to hold her own against Archetype in combat, as confirmed by both the guidebook's statement and the hyped cliffhanger. Why is this significant? It's because True Ancestors, like Arcueid, can manipulate Gaia (the Earth) and alter reality with mere thought, using Marble Phantasm:
③ The user directly connects and imposes their will on the world which creates an interference that transforms the world as they see fit (as they imagine). They make reality an illusion (something impossible in reality).
④ More specifically a marble phantasm is thought to be realized when a multitude of phenomena are interfered with probability-wise, forcibly invoking the impossible.
⑤ What can be materialized is not limited to material objects, anything can be created as long as it’s a possible result of an interference in the probability of (natural) phenomena.
⑥ In the world of Tsukihime, a Marble Phantasm is the materialization of a part of an alien world that exists on top of the normal world, the fantasy world born from the imagination of elemental spirits. Therefore, it is possible for regular humans to wander into a Marble Phantasm.
The effects of world transformation are not directly applied to the target. - Colorful MOON Tsukihime
This ability extends beyond physical changes because celestial bodies in Type-Moon's universe operate under their own abstract laws, governing how these realities function. For example, in Character Materials, it's explained that ORT can rewrite Gaia's physical laws to align with its own celestial order:
Explanation - Crystal Valley
Invasion by a horrifying but beautiful landscape.
While some magi and the 27 Ancestors control internal worlds called "Reality Marbles", the one that ORT has is on a completely different level.
ORT is a "visitor from another planet".
By just him (?) being there, the Earth is changing to the environment he lived in. That is, the rewriting of physical laws, a leaking of his "alien order/system".
If man is that which destroys the planet, then ORT is an invader that paints the earth world into an alien planet. - Character Material - ORT, page 070-071
This concept is reinforced in Angel Notes, where Type-Venus points out that the common understanding of Gaia’s physical laws doesn't apply to beings from other planets, as concepts like death in the Earth's physical sense don't exist for them:
"Are you going to fight that?"
"Looks like it. The Knights are assembling too, and the military's eager to do it. They're aiming to at least change The Cross's curse. If that's it, then the possibility isn't zero."
"It's impossible. Everyone doesn't understand what an Aristoteles is. That isn't a life form on this planet. There is no chance of winning."
"How could that be? In reality, we have already defeated 3 Aristoteleses. If we have more fire power than them, it's not an unstoppable opponent."
"I don't know about that. They can't be judged by this planet's common sense. That's why even a concept of death doesn't exist for them. They won't stop until they achieved their objective." - Angel Notes
Our enemy were species that ruled over the alien branches of another planet, where out common sense doesn't apply. - Angel Notes
This shows that those from other planets exist under completely different rules, which don't adhere to Gaia's system.
Due to True Ancestors being the Type-equivalent of Earth, Marble Phantasm goes beyond mere physical manipulation, transcending the realm of conventional reality warping. It directly interferes with probability and the very structure of ideas, which exist on a higher plane than physical phenomena. While typical reality warping alters the laws of physics, Marble Phantasm manipulates the underlying probabilities and concepts that define those laws, shaping reality according to the user's imagination. This allows the user to manifest anything naturally possible on Earth, not just by changing physical laws, but by altering the fundamental principles that govern existence itself.
The weaker representations of Marble Phantasm in Tsukihime and Kagetsu Tohya are due to True Ancestors focusing their will inward to suppress their vampiric impulses (the desire for blood), rather than outwardly to manipulate reality to their fullest potential:
Each and every True Ancestor is burdened with the desire to drink the blood of the very humans they were meant to rule. And, in order to suppress that impulse, they consume their own willpower. Those that can change the state of the world merely be thinking are instead forced to use almost all of those “thoughts” to restrain themselves.- Tsukihime Dokuhan Plus Period
In contrast, those who aren't burdened by this impulse, such as Altrouge, Type-Moon, Archetype-Earth, and others, are able to manipulate the abstract, turning individuals into mere phenomena, as demonstrated by Altrouge's abilities:
He made a contract with Altrouge of the Crimson Moon entailing that he would turn into TATARI until the next Night of the Crimson Moon in 1000 years, but… - Melty Blood Official Strategy Guide
A member of the 27 Dead Apostle Ancestors. One who tried to embody eternity not as a living being, but as a phenomenon. Tatari. - Melty Blood Act Cadenza PS2 Manual
This shows that the most powerful True Ancestors, unrestrained by their vampiric nature, can directly affect others, including turning them into phenomena. Furthermore, other Types, such as ORT, can rewrite the laws of Gaia, making such reality-warping consistent and formidable.
To go even further, normal Arcueid, at her full power, is said to rival Type-Moon himself. In the past, Arcueid effortlessly defeated three Fallen Ancestors, True Ancestors who had succumbed to their bloodlust and were no longer restrained in their reality-altering abilities:

Another name for the organism that was used as the template for the True Ancestors. Also known as the Crimson Moon Brunestud.
After he vanished, individuals close to him in power started being honored with the title of Brunestud.
However, in the long history of the True Ancestors, only two have ever received the name. - Melty Blood Act Cadenza PS2 Manual
Arcueid being on par with the Crimson Moon becomes even more impressive considering the latter's battle with Zelretch, where he barely lost due to not knowing about outlier humans who could create phenomena beyond what their race could achieve through conventional means (i.e., True Magic). In other words, he was unaware that there were exceptional humans capable of surpassing the limits of humanity in their respective eras:
Also note is that magic doesn’t follow the rules of magecraft, a big reason Crimson Moon lost to Zelretch is due to not fully grasping this. - Colorful MOON Tsukihime
Had Type-Moon not been careless, he likely could have defeated Zelretch.
This is significant because Zelretch's Second Magic grants him dominion over time, allowing him to perform a range of feats, from basic time travel and time reversal to completely rewriting historical events, among other things:

When mimicked by Aoko through the True Nature of her Fifth Magic, the Second Magic reveals even greater capabilities. These include sending attacks to different points in time, jumping between separate segments of the time axis, and overlapping different versions of the user. It can also delay someone's death into the distant future or apply future experiences to the present:
These abilities further demonstrate that the Second Magic does more than merely manipulate time. It can replace, swap, or alter temporal events entirely, granting the user the power to freely edit a person's abilities or parameters by replacing them with an alternate version that developed differently. It can also select a particular future and apply it to the present or replicate phenomena by adjusting the necessary conditions.
This control extends beyond physical time, influencing even abstract time. As such, having control over timelines implies a level of control over the celestial bodies within those timelines, along with some degree of influence over the abstract laws governing them.
With all this in mind, we've established that Arcueid, Type-Moon, and other Types possess the ability to rewrite the abstract laws of reality. They can also directly alter individuals through their reality-warping abilities, as demonstrated when Altrouge transformed Zepia into the phenomenon known as Wallachia. Furthermore, Type-Moon could have defeated Zelretch if he had been more cautious, and Zelretch himself has the power to rewrite history, alter causality, and manipulate timelines that contain celestial bodies. However, Archetype Earth's power surpasses even these examples, as she is an Origin-Awakened being, much like Ryougi Shiki herself.
Archetype Earth is the guiding principle of Arcueid’s existence, shaped by Crimson Moon with the potential to act as his reincarnation, though she remains her own separate entity. Since Arcueid functions as a “Type” or the sensory extension of Gaia, Archetype Earth, as her Origin, is effectively the soul of the planet itself. Her name, Archetype, refers to the original and purest form of something, whereas other Types are simply the strongest lifeforms within a planet’s existing framework.
Planets in the Type-Moon universe are conceptual sentient beings, seemingly inspired by classical mythology, for example:
- Venus as a parasitic lifeform that feeds on beauty and inspiration,
- Jupiter as an entity that expands infinitely,
- Saturn embodying judgment,
- Mercury overwriting foreign realities with its own system (akin to Hermes, the messenger of heaven).
If planets are defined by core concepts, Gaia’s concept would be Life itself. This is supported by Archetype Earth explicitly describing herself as the ultimate expression of Life. Additionally, Ryougi Shiki notes that her Lines of Death are not just difficult to perceive but outright nonexistent, as though Archetype Earth embodies something antithetical to Death itself. This forced Ryougi to impose Death upon her by erasing her ability to interact with reality (her body).
Some people interpret Archetype Earth’s disagreement with Ciel in this conversation as her denying that she has undergone an Origin Awakening:

However, this is a superficial reading. The exchange isn’t about denying that Archetype Earth is shaped by an Origin or core principle. Rather, it’s about clarifying how her existence differs from a typical Origin Awakening as seen in the Type-Moon universe.
Archetype Earth is telling Ciel that she has always been the embodiment of her "archetype" (or Origin) from the very beginning. Unlike humans or magi who experience an Origin Awakening, a process where their core principle or foundational truth is fully realized, Archetype Earth’s existence is inherently aligned with her Origin from the moment of her creation. She didn’t need to "awaken" to it because she already is that principle in its purest form.
Thus, instead of undergoing an Origin Awakening as an event, Archetype Earth’s "awakening" is a cyclical process where the full scope of her being rises to the surface, happening over vast intervals due to the magnitude of her existence.
The key difference between Archetype Earth and the True Ancestors lies in their relationship with Life. The True Ancestors act as enforcers of nature’s rules: they regulate Life, adjust probabilities, and maintain balance on Earth. However, they remain bound by the system they uphold. They can influence how Life functions, but they do not define what Life is.
Archetype Earth, on the other hand, is not just a guardian of Life, she is its source. While the True Ancestors manipulate probability to guide Life’s development, she decides what is possible in the first place. Her authority does not enforce rules; it creates them. This makes her fundamentally different: not just stronger, but unrestricted by any framework. Whereas the True Ancestors rely on Life’s existing structure to act, Archetype Earth stands above it, shaping reality itself according to her will.
More than an extension of Gaia’s will, Archetype Earth is Gaia’s soul: the very essence of the planet itself. Unlike other Types, who operate within their planetary frameworks, Archetype transcends Gaia’s current limitations. This is demonstrated by her effortless command over the planet, such as halting its rotation in Actress Again, proving her authority extends beyond systemic control.
This distinction is why she is called Archetype Earth rather than Type Earth. She is not merely a planetary guardian but the highest form Gaia could ever achieve: an embodiment of its core principle: Life. While other celestial bodies and Types remain bound by their developmental stages, Archetype Earth exists beyond such constraints, fully realizing Gaia’s fundamental concept.
As a power, Life is more than just creation: it is the force that sustains existence, enables growth, and fuels all potential development. Unlike simple regeneration or biological processes, it actively maintains reality, ensuring continuity and evolution. Rather than merely healing or revitalizing, Life in its purest form is the foundation of all things: the very mechanism that allows existence to endure and flourish.
Despite her overwhelming authority over Life, Archetype Earth was still defeated by Base Ryougi Shiki, whose ability to kill anything stemming from The One applies “without exception”, meaning she could potentially undo Archetype's reality-warping abilities, kill any mechanisms Archetype might use to manipulate reality, and so on. Archetype would still pose a threat, especially if Ryougi made a mistake or couldn't keep up with Archetype’s reality manipulation at faster speeds. However, as confirmed in the guidebook, Ryougi was indeed able to prevail.
Oh, and if anyone whines with "it was just a dream!", that's literally the whole point of Tatari.
Ryougi isn't referring to her being in a literal dream, but is referring to her being trapped in a reality marble where everyone has vanished and it feels like a dream. Many characters have stated this. They are in the Tatari's reality marble summoned by Osiris. Even Wallachia himself refers to it as the "midsummer night's dream":

Both Ciel and Aoko even references Osiris' ritual as rewriting the world for a specific set of people and only existing for a single night:

“It’s all just a dream anyway; once I wake up, it’ll be as if it never happened." This sentence simply reflects the idea that whatever happens within Tatari is not permanent and will vanish once the temporary reality (or dream) ends. It emphasizes the transient nature of Tatari and how, like a dream, its events will be erased or forgotten when the reality marble dissolves.
Defeating Archetype also speaks to Shiki's speed. How is that? Well, In terms of physical size, celestial bodies like Gaia are composed of multiple distinct realms, each with its own unique characteristics:
Also, it is assumed that in the world of Tsukihime there exists another world on top of the normal world, things like legendary lands and countries of eternal spring, products of the imagination of the fairies that rule over this alien world. Consequently, it is possible for humans to wander into them by accident. - Tsukihime Data Collection
Although the term "assumed" is used, later information confirms this, as we see a realm (likely the Reverse Side) that appears completely alien to Gaia’s normal reality, with its own cosmos complete with moons and stars:

Considering they are their own realities with their own abstract laws, none of this should be surprising.
We know that Marble Phantasm can materialize an alien world of fantasy.
⑥ In the world of Tsukihime, a Marble Phantasm is the materialization of a part of an alien world that exists on top of the normal world, the fantasy world born from the imagination of elemental spirits. Therefore, it is possible for regular humans to wander into a Marble Phantasm. - Colorful MOON Tsukihime
And we know Arcueid can summon her reality where the Millennium Castle is:

This seems irrelevant to speed and more like it belongs to reality warping, but no, it's very important. You see, Arcueid manifests things with her thoughts:
In Tsukihime, Arcueid’s marble phantasm is depicted as an ability that allows her to materialize her thoughts. - Melty Blood Official Strategy Guide
We see her do this against Maiko Yamase, where she imagines into reality the area around her to be frozen:

This only fails because Maiko Yamase is beyond mere physical alterations, as she's becoming the True Chaos of creation, but that's besides the point.
Arcueid herself can only do physical alterations here because she's in a weakened state too of course, suppressing her bloodlust and all that, as this is normal Arcueid, not Archetype-Earth or Arcueid before she ever tasted blood, which is what gave her the urge in the first place.
So how does this connect to speed? When Arcueid materializes something, she’s not just “wishing” it into existence. She’s imagining it starting from scratch: from the abstract laws of the universe, down to the smallest particles. We see this when the world she’s creating begins to spread outward, demonstrating that she is reconstructing it layer by layer, not just popping things into reality.
While this doesn't provide a precise speed feat like 7.5 centillion times FTL, it does show that Arcueid’s thought speed is obscenely fast. She can quickly manifest a complete, fully functional copy of the Moon, an entire celestial body:

We see Wallachia manifesting as Arcueid and using her power to create a copy of the Moon too:

So this can't be argued to be a gameplay mechanic.
----
Another final misconception about Ryougi is that she cannot see the Points of Death like Nanaya Shiki. However, this is incorrect. She unlocked this ability during her encounter with Araya Souren:
Strongly, harder than she had ever done before, Shiki glares at the man. Her brain may have overheated, because she observed the opponent till a portion of her consciousness went white, only then could she see it.... In the centre of his body, she can see a hole in the middle of his chest. The line went round and round like a child's doodling, tracing a circle at the same place. The result was what looked like a hole - Kara no Kyoukai Chapter 5
This was Araya's 'weak spot,' a location that would directly end his physical existence within reality. Since Shiki couldn't normally perceive the Lines of Death, she was instead able to sense the 'Death' of his entire form, a tether to reality. The reason it wasn’t an instant kill was due to Araya’s long lifespan and his absurdly strong willpower:
"I realise that spot is my weakness. But just that is not enough. Even if it's the Mystic Eyes of Death Perception, you cannot instantly kill this two hundred year old life of mine. - Kara no Kyoukai Chapter 5.
Later on, the AA guidebook explicitly states that Shiki sees the death of all things in the form of Lines and dots:

The Lines of Death represent the natural lifespan or mortality of an entity. For most beings, these lines mark the end of their existence. However, for immortal beings like Araya Souren and Archetype Earth, these lines are either faint, invisible, or nonexistent. Araya is immortal in the sense that his soul is undying, but his body is still subject to aging and decay, which is why his Lines of Death are faint, they correspond to the eventual aging of his physical form, which will eventually die despite his immortality. On the other hand, Archetype, as an Ultimate One, is truly immortal, and thus lacks traditional Lines of Death.
Despite this, both entities still possess Points of Death, specific structural weaknesses in their physical forms. These points are not related to aging or the concept of life, but instead represent critical weaknesses that result in the immediate collapse of the entity in reality. Shiki, though she cannot perceive the full Lines of Death on these immortal beings, can sense these Points of Death, which are critical areas that can be exploited to kill them. By targeting these points, Shiki can bypass their immortality and erase their presence from reality, even though their souls or essences cannot die in the traditional sense.
So Ryougi Shiki can indeed see the Points of Death, but Nanaya is naturally more adept at perceiving them due to his Origin and fighting instincts. Nanaya’s Origin is about killing efficiently, meaning he instinctively perceives the weak points of an entity, which corresponds to the Points of Death. His training and instincts make him more attuned to recognizing these vulnerabilities.
On the other hand, Ryougi can see the Points of Death, but her perception isn't naturally aligned with identifying these weak points in the same way as Nanaya. Ryougi's instincts are more focused on correcting reality and integrating aspects of existence within herself, as she is fundamentally a concept destroyer. This makes her approach to death more about how it interacts with the larger picture of existence. While she can still perceive the Points of Death, it requires more focus and effort from her, as it’s not as inherent to her as it is to Nanaya.
So, it’s not that Ryougi is incapable of seeing the Points of Death, it’s just that Nanaya is instinctively more in tune with them due to his nature. This subtle difference highlights how their abilities function and reflect their respective Origins, Ryougi’s focus on conceptual death and reality correction, and Nanaya’s focus on efficient physical elimination.
Bonus explanation:
This is a secondary explanation regarding a lesser known aspect of Ryougi's abilities: Her resistance to certain abilities, like mind manipulation, hypnosis, and reality-warping abilities. This resistance can be attributed to her Origin and the unique existential detachment it grants her. A key example of this is when Shiki resists Kirie’s mental suggestion:
"You've got to be kidding me."
Saying that, Shiki raises the empty left hand.
The suggestion does not work anymore. Shiki is not even fazed.
"I don't have that kind of admiration for the sky. I don't feel alive, so I don't know the pain of living. To be honest, I don't care about you at all."
...A murmur more like singing.
Shiki does not feel any restraint, joy or sorrow in life.
That's why Shiki is not attracted to the liberation from pain.
"But I don't like you keeping him. I got him first, so I'm taking him back."
Shiki's left hand grabs the empty air and pulls back.
As if being pulled by the left hand, the woman and the girls are pulled toward Shiki like fish being reeled in with a net.
"---------!"
The woman's expression changes. She puts more resolve into her will and pounds it against Shiki.
If she could communicate with Shiki, she would have screamed
"Fall!"
Ignoring the curse, Shiki responds in an icy tone.
"You fall."
The knife drives into the chest of the woman as she is forced downwards. As simply and swiftly as slicing through a fruit, and with such precision that even the woman feels a brief glimpse of admiration. - Kara no Kyoukai Chapter 1
While it’s suggested that Shiki’s resistance is due in part to her lack of feeling alive, her resilience goes beyond mere emotional detachment. Kirie, too, is an Origin-awakened being:
"I failed 2 years ago. That person was too different. What was needed were those who had diverged from the same 'origin.'" – Kara no Kyoukai Chapter 5
Kirie shares a unique connection to Shiki through their respective interpretations of "Nothingness." Kirie embodies a psychological version of "Nothingness," a detachment from the world that allows her to exert control over others’ minds. This manifests in her powers of mental suggestion, which can brainwash others by forcibly altering their perceptions.
In Chapter 1, Kirie’s suggestion to make someone fly is portrayed as irresistibly powerful, her influence is so strong that even the most resolute individuals cannot escape it:
Her subliminal suggestion, urging her victim to fly, wasn’t working on this girl.
Her ability to force the image of flying into a person’s very consciousness was beyond the realm of hunting and was more like full-fledged brainwashing. There was no resisting it. As a result of the inevitable suggestion, whether they believed it would actually happen or not, people simply ran over the edge of the roof, secure in the firm belief that they could fly.
Shiki had brushed this urge aside after only slight dizziness.
Maybe, the woman pondered, it had just been a glancing blow. She resolved to try once more.
It would be much stronger this time.
Not “You can fly” this time. A strong compulsion: “You will fly.” - Kara no Kyoukai Chapter 1
Yet, Shiki remains unaffected, even when the compulsion is greatly intensified. This indicates that Shiki’s resistance is rooted in her own unique existential void, a resistance that transcends mere emotional detachment or lack of empathy.
Both Shiki and Kirie share an Origin connected to "Nothingness," but their interpretations differ. Shiki’s "Nothingness" is an existential void, a profound detachment from the world that shapes her very being. This makes her resistant to manipulations, including mental suggestions that would otherwise be inescapable.
In Chapter 6, the extent of Shiki's resistance to reality-warping abilities is further clarified. Through her connection to Akasha, granted by her Mystic Eyes of Death Perception, Shiki is able to resist even the profound reality-altering power of God's Word and the Unified Language, a form of communication that directly manipulates existence itself:
"This Place." "Inhibits." "Sight."
The voice reverberated through the chapel, which had now plunged into complete darkness. With a single word, the world turned invisible, devoid of light.
"Hm... It appears the effect is weaker on you. Your connection to the Fount places you on the same rank as my words. But that's been accounted for. Here, even Ryougi Shiki cannot perceive death. Though, of course, I can't see anything here either."- Kara no Kyoukai Chapter 6
We call this the Unified Language.
The Unified Language is a power so profound that it transcends typical communication. Described as a formless language, it interacts directly with the world itself, granting the speaker the power to make anything they say an absolute truth. Rejection of this power would be tantamount to denying one's very existence in the world.
Through the Unified Language, God's Word can manipulate all of reality, compelling everything to align with His will, this includes altering the past, as the world records human memories in a manner akin to the Akashic Records. It’s a power capable of bending the world to the speaker's command.
However, Shiki’s connection to Akasha, through her Mystic Eyes of Death Perception, grants her immunity to this reality-warping power. When God's Word attempts to manipulate Shiki's perception and actions using the Unified Language, it becomes evident that Shiki is partially immune. God's Word himself acknowledges that Shiki’s connection to the “Fount” (Akasha) places her on a level where she is less vulnerable to his power than others. The impact of his words is weaker on Shiki due to this connection, showcasing that her resistance is not just psychological, but metaphysical.
To overcome Shiki, God's Word is forced to alter the very nature of the battleground. He warps the environment itself to block Shiki’s Mystic Eyes, preventing her from perceiving anything, including death. This reality distortion is necessary for God's Word to overpower her. Without this manipulation, Shiki's connection to Akasha would render his powers far less effective, demonstrating the profound depth of her resistance.
This scene emphasizes the profound bond Shiki has with Akasha and the power of her Mystic Eyes. While God's Word can bend reality and compel existence to follow his will, Shiki’s bond with Akasha and her existential void protect her from being fully controlled by such powers. Her Mystic Eyes of Death Perception not only allow her to perceive death but also serve as a shield against forces attempting to reshape or dominate her reality.
Another notable example of Ryougi Shiki's immunity is seen in MBAA during the Dust of Osiris ritual. This ritual seeks to rewrite the World by replicating a night from the past, where Arcueid brings the Crimson Moon from 1000 years in the future to defeat Wallachia in the first MB:

Aoko notes that this ritual didn’t affect her due to her Fifth Magic's properties:

Similarly, Ryougi is unaffected, even though Osiris was unaware of her existence. This suggests that Ryougi wasn't excluded intentionally, emphasizing her immunity to the ritual's effects:

All of this proves that Shiki is resistant to reality warping and mind control due to the existential void stemming from her Origin. When combined with her Mystic Eyes of Death Perception, (Capable of killing anything that flows out of the One, including abstract concepts) this makes affecting her with just any random hax effectively impossible.
One final point to emphasize is that Shiki's Origin awakening makes her stats and abilities impossible to copy. This is evident when a massively weaker Tatari shadow of Nanaya effortlessly toys with a serious Arcueid, casually dismissing her attacks as half-assed:

Arcueid then does something surprising, which is summon her power as Archetype-Earth to kill Nanaya.

This is significant because Arcueid receives active backing from the planet itself:

This backing ensures that Arcueid always becomes stronger and faster than her enemy, enforcing her status as the planet's representative:
"It's not like Senpai moves with Arcueid's amazing speed. But she accurately deflects Arcueid's blazing attacks while standing on the ground. As a third person looking on, their strengths are equal. However, just like Senpai said, Arcueid's power seems limitless. No matter how amazing Senpai is, her power is not something that goes beyond a certain point. In contrast, Arcueid seems limitless. In the beginning, Senpai was overwhelming her, but Arcueid matches her quickly and is now easily surpassing her powers." — Tsukihime - Near Side: Ciel's Route 6/Bow in the Sky I
Yet, this planetary support was completely ineffective against Nanaya. This is because Nanaya’s power source is a cosmic force that vastly transcends Gaia’s authority. His Origin actively rewrites reality to enforce the universal truth of his existence, making him the ultimate assassin against anyone who does not wield a superior truth of existence, such as Ryougi herself.
Furthermore, Araya Souren explicitly states that certain abilities, particularly those tied to Akasha, such as Ryougi’s, cannot be replicated and can only be obtained by being chosen from birth:
"The Counter Force interferes with any attempt to reach enlightenment to this extent. Because that is an act which leads to the power which humans cannot be allowed to attain, a return to nothingness. [...] In that case, why are there those who reached the origin? The answer is simple. There is no way of reaching it. There are just humans who have reached it. [...] Ability is like that. You have it from the moment that you are born. It is the difference between being chosen and not being chosen." — Kara no Kyoukai Chapter 5
Thus, Ryougi Shiki’s abilities and stats cannot be copied, as her Origin is a fundamental force shaping reality itself.
As a final note of this "bonus abilities" section, Ryougi also has combat senses honed since birth that allows her to detect danger:
Exiting into the alleyway, an odd sense of unease crept up on me. My skin, honed from birth, screamed danger. - Kara no Kyoukai Chapter 7

She also somehow "knew" that Nrvnqsr was hiding in the area and could even tell what type of being he was, surprising the vampire:

And sense Archetype Earth's presence:

Conclusion:
It’s clear that Shiki Ryougi is an overwhelmingly superhuman figure, possessing transcendental combat skills that not only surpass those of supernatural beings but also any creature bound by Gaia’s ecosystem. Her power is derived directly from a universal concept that transcends even planetary boundaries, including Types. Her Mystic Eyes of Death Perception allow her to kill anything without exception, be it words, reality-warping phenomena, or beings like Archetype Earth in MB, everything is within her reach. And when she activates her Self-Hypnosis, her power becomes even more insane. I’ll provide a link to an explanation of that here in case you missed it.
Shiki Ryougi’s default MEoDP requires her to close the distance and trace the Lines/Points of Death. This is her standard approach because she thrives in battle, as it channels her killing instincts and prevents her from losing herself. However, when faced with a serious threat or in urgent situations, she can switch to higher levels of perception, allowing her to kill abstract concepts or even words. This ability enables her to erase the identity, abilities, or fundamental laws that define an entity or object, by conceptualizing their end and manifesting it within her reach, without the need to close any distance.
Furthermore, Shiki Ryougi’s Origin automatically makes her faster than anyone not embodying a superior conceptual force, rewriting physical laws in the process. Thanks to this, she defeated someone capable of manipulating the abstract laws of reality and literally thinking entire realities and celestial bodies into existence, complete with their own cosmos and laws, nearly instantaneously. The sheer speed required to construct entire realities from scratch with nothing but thought is beyond comprehension. Shiki herself has demonstrated such unfathomable speed that she can dodge spatial distortions the moment she senses her body being twisted, reacting to the shift in reality before it even fully materializes.
Even Lio Shirazumi, who transcended Gaia’s laws with his Origin of Consumption, was unable to keep up with Shiki. While Lio's Consumption reshaped reality to ensure his dominance as its representative and the ultimate predator, Shiki’s Origin, the balance between life and death, creation and destruction, enables her to control the very equilibrium of existence itself. This allows her to move in perfect synchronization with the forces of reality, reacting not to what is, but to what must be, far surpassing the limitations of conventional beings.
In other words, when backed by her Origin, Shiki’s speed actively bypasses physical constraints such as reaction time, spatial distortions, and even reality warping that would normally dictate motion within a given framework. This is because her mind directly draws power from a universal truth, allowing her to move beyond conventional causality. Even inferior Origins, like Lio’s Consumption, surpass any creature bound by physical form, and others (Such as Araya Souren using Stillness to make his motion imperceptible) demonstrate how Origins can rewrite the very concept of movement itself. Likewise, Nanaya Shiki’s Origin granted him superiority over Arcueid’s Gaia backup, as his conceptual authority as Death surpasses that of a planet’s local reality, preventing Gaia from compensating for the gap in speed.
Beyond this, Shiki’s Origin grants her immense resistance to both reality-warping and mental manipulation, further solidifying her resilience. She can also sense presences across an entire town and effortlessly detect stealthed opponents attempting to hide from her. As if that weren’t enough, her existence as a "program" with hundreds of "software" functions, each designed for near-perfect execution, especially in combat, allows her to instantly analyze, replicate, and perfect any technique she encounters. This includes the Nanaya martial arts, which enable her to manipulate space for unconventional movements, move at teleportation-like speeds, exploit even the smallest gaps in an opponent’s defense (even against physically superior foes), and unleash dozens of slashes in an instant.
Even someone like Zelretch, who can manipulate parallel worlds containing celestial bodies and influence their governing laws, change outcomes, rewrite historical records, send attacks across different timestreams, or edit the abilities and parameters of individuals, is still inferior to a serious Crimson Moon, and by extension, Archetype-Earth. Archetype Earth embodies the very concept of Life itself, with all potential physical forms creation can ever take serving solely as vessels to express and fulfill her directive, where time, matter, and shape are completely subordinate to her will. And yet, Base Ryougi was able to defeat Archetype Earth. You'd need to be some omni-backed demiurge that's hard-coded into reality and given special preference by an omnipotent to negate MEoDP. But for anything else? Shiki Ryougi cuts, and it ceases to be.
So, the next time someone claims that Ryougi is "just a normal girl" or that her physical stats aren't impressive, they are 100% either lying or talking out of their assess. Likewise, the idea of her not being one of the strongest character in the verse is asinine, even without her Void personality. Battleboarders who pit her against characters like Gojo or whatever shonen protagonist is trending are doing her a massive disservice; she’s literally designed to fight cosmic-level beings.
Regarding Void Shiki, I'll link a thread where a friend of mine clears up all misconceptions regarding her as well, if you are interested.
Alternatively, there is another longer thread I made entirely for Void Shiki. On top of yet another thread I made debunking general misconceptions about both Void and normal Ryougi.
------
So, to summarize Ryougi Shiki's entire combat ability (Excluding her Void personality):
Shiki’s abilities stem from the concept of Nothingness, representing infinite potential capable of manifesting anything without altering its inherent nature. This concept embodies her Origin, an abstract force that shapes all of reality across cycles of reincarnation, making her combat ability transcend space and time, as long as she remains aligned with and focused on this foundational principle.
When wielding her knife, she embodies the perfect balance of Yin and Yang, light and darkness, seamlessly blending every combat style and skill necessary to execute her task. Her Mystic Eyes of Death Perception manifest this principle: her Yin aspect perceives the flaws in reality, while her Yang aspect eliminates them with the most efficient course of action, striving toward a perfected state under the flawless equilibrium of the One, the source of all things. This allows her to erase any concept or entity that flowed from the Root/One, instantly copy, refine, and blend any technique she encounters, and have her combat ability bypass all physical constraints (such as an opponent’s speed, reaction time, spatial distortions, reality warping, or even her own injuries), acting with the fastest, strongest, and most efficient method to "correct" reality.
When she wields her sword and enters Self-Hypnosis mode (Whose fighting prowess is described in this other thread I will link here once again in case you missed it), Shiki transcends the duality of the Ryougi and becomes a direct representation of the One itself. If her base state balances reality and optimizes it, her true swordsmanship ignores it entirely, having reached the self-contained and complete state of " ", a state with no need for individual boundaries. As a result, Shiki’s swordsmanship is virtually limitless:
- Distance becomes zero, as all physical coordinates are accessible to her as a unified whole.
- She blends and overlaps multiple actions instantaneously, perceiving time as an eternal present.
- The physical/metaphysical structure of her targets becomes irrelevant, as all things share the same truest essence tethering them to existence.
- She gazes upon future possibilities, understanding the interconnectedness of all things.
