Hierarchy of Old Type-Moon
This is a brief summary of how various characters compared to each other in the older lore, before Fate and other retcons altered it into essentially a separate canon:
-----
The Fount (or the One) is the source of all existence and all possibilities. It is called “nothingness” because it cannot be fully defined in a single term: any attempt to name or think about it is already just one possibility sourced from it. The very act of describing it is a reduction of its greater whole, which is the paradox at the core of Kara no Kyoukai. The only characters who directly harness its true nature are Void Shiki and Ryougi Shiki in her self-hypnosis state. However, Void Shiki finds all things meaningless, while the self-hypnotized Ryougi dissolves into “nothing”, becoming a pure instrument of swordsmanship. Essentially, reaching the One grants near-perfection or near-omnipotence but dissolves the self entirely, because it cannot be grasped otherwise.
From the Fount, the swirl (spiral, maelstrom) is formed: it contains all abstract concepts flowing outward from the Source. These concepts are the foundation of existence and in this pure state are unchanging and immutable: this is Stillness, where no change or interpretation exists yet. Araya Souren’s power is to bring this stasis of perfection into reality and use it to structure the world anew as he sees fit ("In the beginning, the First changed all", "creating Nothingness"). This is also the state to which the Mystic Eyes of Death Perception return things, the unchanging void of pure potential. Stillness is, in essence, harnessing the One’s perfection through structured logic and conscious will, using the ideas in the swirl as guidelines. But this means being unable to reach the One’s true perfection, because that would require dissolving even the self that seeks to shape it. That is why Araya's ultimate goal is described as an endless spiral with no resolution.
From the abstract concepts within the swirl, reality is formed. Because the ideas themselves are immutable, reality takes shape through specific forms and interpretations of them. Infinite possible variations exist, all in flux within True Chaos, awaiting direction. Origins act as the directions that shape True Chaos’s potential and bring it into form as reality. When someone awakens their Origin, they gain complete access to the influence and power of this current, with some being more limited (such as Lio, who embodies all predatory creatures that can ever exist, or Asagami, who can bend the structure of physical space) and others wielding extraordinary power over the world (like Ryougi or Araya). Some Origins manifest as planets or celestial bodies, which act as self-contained realities with unique systems of logic based on their governing concept. Types act as enforcers of those systems, while Archetypes embody the primal concept the planet and its systems are founded on, functioning similarly to beings who have awakened to their Origin.
When something “dies,” its essence is recycled into True Chaos for a new reincarnation. Kishima Kouma, for example, embodies this “natural” death that purifies existence back into a new form, a destruction that preserves the cycle. Entropy (Wielded by Aoko Aozaki) governs the change, decay, and eventual recycling of all things in reality.
The Second Magic (Wielded by Zelretch) sits in this structure as the principle that accesses the various timelines and possible variations reality has taken on a temporal level. It bridges the swirl’s abstract potential and the realized forms across all possible temporal branches ("It recognizes many").
Finally, most other beings and mages are bound to the local physical reality of Gaia, the layer where all these deeper truths manifest as the “natural laws” we see and understand.
Now, to rank the reality warping capabilities of the higher tier characters:
The first immediate form of it in the rankings is 30% Arcueid:
Manifests natural physical phenomena, enhanced or modified. It’s physics manipulation but strictly bound to physical effects, nature’s physical laws and their direct outcomes.
Fully Inverted Akiha:
Can plunder the “heat” of beings and objects, their vitality and even their underlying concept. Nanaya notes in a bad end that even his soul was being ensnared. Powerful, but limited to direct targets. She absorbs the concept as a side effect of plundering, but cannot directly rewrite abstract concepts. The concepts she absorbs remain within her, which can attract curses.
Touko Aozaki:
Now, Touko doesn't have reality warping per se, but her shadow cat familiar is an entity made entirely of Ether, a conceptual substance that precedes the four elements. Because of this, the creature can move in unconventional ways, reverse gravity, cover large distances in a few seconds, and completely no-sell all physical or elemental attacks. The true body of this familiar is also in Touko's projection machine, meaning that as long as that is intact, the creature can endlessly revive even if destroyed by other conceptual attacks. The cat itself can shield Touko as a typhoon-like barrier that shreds all things in range, while its offense comes from opening its man-sized body as a portal to a pocket dimension that compresses and pastes the target inside its own being to be slowly consumed.
Against opponents without conceptual abilities, those who rely solely on physical parameters, magecraft, or natural phenomena sourced from Ether, this familiar effectively guarantees Touko victory, even against restricted Arcueid.
On top of this, Touko wears a special coat; an artifact that absorbs blunt impacts and completely prevents interference with her magic circuits. This defense appears to have no quantifiable limit, as it could even partially withstand Araya’s true magic-tier spatial compression. Together, these factors make Touko nearly impossible to defeat for combatants bound to the rules of physics.
True Chaos (Nrvnqsr):
Can tap into every legend, anxiety, and phenomenon embedded in humanity’s collective consciousness, a wellspring of archetypes and fears. But he still remains subordinate to entities that can alter the foundational logic of Gaia, including Tatari itself.
Asagami:
Can reduce spatial rules to “nothing,” folding and twisting objects in space regardless of their composition, hardness, or orientation. However, she’s limited to the physical layer of space: things that inherently ignore or transcend spatial laws can resist her distortion. Also, her distortions are a localized imposition of her perspective, meaning they’re always subordinate to the greater laws of space, so any reality warper with greater authority can override them.
Lio:
He embodies the concept of predation itself, allowing him to bend physical laws and continuously rewrite his body’s makeup to favor him in any contest with prey. To overcome him, you need control over a more fundamental concept that surpasses predation.
Kishima Kouma:
His hellfire can consume every object or force in reality, but it cannot target the underlying concept or the logic that sustains them. He erases the physical manifestation, not the abstract idea.
Demon Lords:
Can alter probability itself within the scope of Gaia’s system. They can make any possible variation of its laws manifest, including phenomena like Tatari. However, they cannot redefine the system’s core: they cannot erase or create its fundamental rules.
Roa:
Can manipulate the numerical “code” underpinning Gaia’s system, making him far more precise and versatile than Demon Lords. But he, too, remains bound to Gaia’s system.
Alaya:
A collective unconscious will that can redefine the local logic of reality but only within the scope of ensuring humanity’s continued existence. Its Counter Guardians and agents can nullify miracles or True Magic that would destroy humanity’s future. However, its power cannot act contrary to its core principle of human survival.
Types, Altrouge, and Past Arcueid:
This marks a major leap in authority over reality. Types can directly govern the foundational system of their celestial body, shaping what is possible and impossible at the most basic level. They can create or erase concepts entirely, establishing the “common sense” their world must follow; without these laws, that reality could not exist at all. Demon Lords, by comparison, manipulate probability within Gaia’s system. They can make any possible outcome certain, but cannot manifest what is fundamentally impossible under current laws. Types bypass this limit, able to bring forth phenomena with zero probability under existing rules, such as Altrouge’s creation of Tatari, constrained only by their will.
Zelretch:
By operating across the multiverse, Zelretch is not bound to any single reality’s system. He can traverse and manipulate divergent timelines, replacing one outcome with an alternative from another branch. This ability allows him to circumvent a Type’s control over their own world by introducing results their laws are unprepared to accommodate.
Archetype Earth:
Embodies the very concept of Gaia itself, allowing her to manifest any reality within Gaia’s domain. She represents every possible form and cycle Gaia can ever evolve into. However, she still requires the fundamental energy Aoko governs in order to enact any of these possibilities; without Aoko’s flow, her realities remain potential, not actuality.
Prime Roa:
Having accessed a portion of Archetype Earth’s primordial True Chaos, the raw swirl of all possible forms Gaia can assume, Roa taps directly into the planet’s deepest potential. His Numerology refines this chaos by decoding and rewriting the numerical “blueprints” that define existence, granting him surgical control over reality’s framework. This synergy lets Prime Roa consciously shape Gaia’s potential in any direction, surpassing any individual Type, who can only manifest the fixed form of their own celestial body. Whatever opposing reality confronts him, Roa can replicate or counter it, then refine it to an optimized state that remains entirely under his command.
Aoko’s Fifth Magic:
Governs the energy expenditure of a reality, granting her total control over how outcomes unfold and how foundational logic is expressed on a universal scale. She explicitly overrode the universe when she first used it. Without her Magic's domain, no event or possibility can be “powered” into existence; even an infinite reality is inert without its energy flow. Reckless use will eventually disperse the universe’s energy until nothing more is possible.
Records of the World:
All the systems and concepts above are recorded by the Records of the World: a layer similar to a lesser version of the Akashic Records. It compiles everything that exists so reality recognizes it as “true.”
- God’s Word can directly edit these records, rewriting reality to match his statements.
- Mystic Eyes of Death Perception (Nanaya and Ryougi) bypass the records entirely, removing them and sending the target back to the Spiral of Origin where pure abstract forms reside.
- Kirie's Origin does not directly alter the records but disrupts an entity’s subconscious ability to interpret them, forcing it to return to the Spiral once it loses all existential purpose.
The Spiral of Origin:
Holds all actual ideas in their purest, unchanging form: they cannot be interpreted or altered. These ideas act as the fundamental truths everything else refers to. Reality itself is formed by specific interpretations or manifestations of these ideas, contained in True Chaos, directed by Origins, and registered by the Records of the World.
Stillness (Araya Souren):
Stillness represents this swirl of primordial ideas devoid of change. It gives Araya the power to “pause” reality and restructure it into an unbreakable loop, born from the void of possibilities. These boundaries act as the logical restrictions on all that can be, making his constructed worlds absolute and uncontestable. It’s like fighting the void that your purest abstract form depends on, he holds absolute authority even over True Chaos and the Records of the World.
Base Araya already exerts this passive stasis on any reality around him, making him absurdly powerful, but still limited to reducing existing realities to inert potential. His later True Magic completed this, letting him apply this stasis to the very starting causes and foundational logic of a reality, binding it to obey his will.
Prime Araya, after his “death,” merges his very consciousness with Stillness itself, allowing him, when he returns, to engulf all of creation in that absolute stasis.
Void Shiki:
The only being that surpasses him. Void Shiki (or Ryougi through self-hypnosis) taps into a perspective aligned with the Fount, where all possibilities are unified in perfection and thus become “nothing” that can be grasped. This gives her a power as close to omnipotence as possible, bypassing even Araya’s structured logic. She doesn’t merely wield the abstract forms: she is the abstract forms. She can ignore cause, effect, and any definition or interpretation, even his absolute ones. But this also dissolves her conscious will, since she no longer needs anything and simply is.
And that concludes this list.
